Weekly poll: Redmi 9 does more than the Redmi 8, but costs more too - is it worth it?

14 June 2020
The base Redmi series have always been some of the best value-for-money phones. The 9 certainly offers more value, but it is not better in every way.

Viachy, 15 Jun 2020I hate the huge screen. Typing this on 5.7 inch Redmi 56.5" should be the standard. I don't mind paying more for full hd, bigger screen and modern soc. This just destroyed the realme c3.

It costs more but Redmi 9 is definitely worth it. I think it will be an affordable gaming phone for users.

I'm not interested in chinese brands. No thanks!

I'm a ADB user and I can eliminate any system app and ads in miui like they never existed.

My bigger problem is size and weight of these small timers going sky high... Its just a physical and software bloat!
For comparison, I'm using a Redmi 2 Prime, which matches an old model iphone in audio quality, and weighs just 133 Grams, with 67mm width, and runs like breeze on Snpdragon 410 and 2 GB RAM, with a 128GB card and 2 SIM cards together... and 80% memory filled overall.
And I'm doing everything a modern person is doing.

People are being fooled but they don't realise it. They're carrying a world of bloat, and this extra weight is too.
However, now I can't find a replacement for my phone.

the spec not bad..but 18w charger in the box is more appropriate.

Anonymous, 14 Jun 2020All of their hardware might be good. Their prices might be ... moreAnd yea, unlike layman users, I know how to flash cleaner ROMs and how to disable and debloat most of the spyware and adware system apps in MIUI. But the fact that they so forcefully want to push ads as an official stance (at least for the Indian market) leaves a bad taste and I will take my money elsewhere.

                    MIUI = no buy.

I agree to a certain extent. But with snapdragon chipset you can flash thousands of custom roms. All custom roms have better features than latest android, great battery life too along with GCam port. I wish Redmi Note 8 Pro had as powerful snapdragon chipset as G90T, it would have been great success. It lacks on custom rom development. Remaining every phone from Redmi Note line up has great custom rom support. Redmi Note 3/4/5 Pro/7S/7 Pro/8 all have great custom support. I still have Redmi Note 4 with Android 10 AOSIP derpfest rom. Runs like buttery smooth. Battery life champion too on moderate usage. Same goes with rest of the phones. Right now for Indian Market only four requirements/improvements over Redmi Note 9 Pro Max. Amoled display with underdisplay finger print scanner. Dedicated microsd card slot. Faster charging support with fast charger on box. I don't care with chipset between 730/730G/765/765G,any of these will be fine. It's high time Redmi Note series should have two models only 6+128/8+256. Both under INR20000/US$300. Its a must. These are my expectations from Redmi Note 10 Pro/Redmi Note 10 Pro Max.

Anonymous, 14 Jun 2020The p70 is on par (if not better) than g80Geekbench says otherwise. Might not be the most accurate but it beats it by a notch. Compare the realme 6i with the one macro (wish i had the 6i here in romania), the 6i has a small amount of pixels mors than the macro yet it performs the same. And 100 score on geekbench which doesn't mean too much...

13abySouL-, 14 Jun 2020In my opinion Android should use the strategy that apple... moreSamsung Exynos are crappy processors even with new One UI. Both flagship as well as this midrangers and their optimization is not so great on Exynos ones. Compare snapdragon phone of Samsung and Exynos, you will see huge difference side by side. Only A50 was optimized properly. But I faced problems in network reception for all Exynos 9610/9611 powered handsets. M series above 140 dollar mark should have Amoled display otherwise its DOA. And Samsung should use chipsets like snapdragon 665/675/710/712/720/720G/730/730G for powering Samsung phones under 20000. They are too cheap right now. Doesn't want to see Exynos on A series atleast. It's good phone with bad chipset and bad camera. Software has improved a lot on Samsung. There should be snapdragon chipset to blend two things to full potential. Otherwise Samsung should room as soon as possible. Look at Samsung S10 Lite sales compared to Samsung S20 sales world wide. Snapdragon makes a lot of difference. Had it been not banned, Huawei would have taken a substantial lead in smartphone industry by now. Huawei P30 Pro and Huawei P40 Pro are great products. Even their midrange chips like Kirin 810/820 are miles ahead of snapdragon counterparts in my opinion. I wish Huawei rises again somehow to keep Samsung on toes and make Samsung use snapdragon in all of their phones.

The price is nice but I rather spend a little bit more for Note 9 or Note 9 Pro

I have no problem with Redmi 9 sold at $150 but they need Redmi 9a at $110 or so.
It's not a problem if it only have 720p with 3gb ram, after all it's a go to phone for people who simply need a "smartphone" for accessing whatsapp and the like.
                              ---
Sammy slowly become an option with their M21 and especially M31 with their "One" skin. Especially nowadays where, there is an inherent Ads problem in MIUI and the fact that it collects all your browsing and usage data indiscriminately possibly to be sold somewhere else.
