Light, the designer of the Nokia 9 PureView camera, leaves the smartphone market

11 June 2020
This means that HMD will have to look elsewhere for the camera on the perpetually-delayed Nokia 9.3 PureView.

MATE 30 PRO, 12 Jun 2020It is not annoying, it is the truth, or do you want to read... moreThe problem is, you keep saying the same bull''t over and over again, you're getting boring. If you don't like HMD, nobody is forcing you to buy their devices. But to troll their comment section everytime their is something about them, or even worse, nothing quite about them here being Light under the "Camera" you gotta have a lot of time. As for they are not avangarde, well nokia 9 it is, a great niche supercamera device. The only problem with the phone is that the people actually need to use their brain, to be able to use it's camera. I admit, pretty uncomun this days.

The only thing HMD has done is revive the Nokia name to use it on a type of phone without anything attractive and nothing that sets the brand apart.
Nokia, when it was the real one, built avant-garde phones.
Nowadays, it only launches phones based on outdated hardware and with continuous delays. And I know what I'm talking about because I had several Nokia from 2001 to 2013.

I already said many times that Nokia CEOs should be fired and give way to other kind of people who give HMD a different way.

And I'm sorry, but while HMD does not make a radical turn to its strategies, it will always read the same comments to me because it is the truth, or ... should I lie according to your opinion ???

MATE 30 PRO, 11 Jun 2020HMD once again is devaluing the name of the great and authe... morePretty annoying that you have to say this in every Nokia-related post

Nothing New, 11 Jun 2020I miss lumia days when nokia smartphones were the best when... moreI so agree with you. I have tried multiple Android smartphone cameras to see which one can beat both the Lumia 1020 and the Lumia 950 that I have right now and none can come close to this day. The only two areas where newer phones are doing better than both of them are low light situation and camera versatility. Other than that? Completely hopeless, especially regarding photo quality.

Come to think about this, the 9.3 PureView is rumoured to have a 108MP main camera. At the moment, only Samsung made such a huge MP camera sensor. More than that, the cameras on both Nokia 7 plus and Nokia 8 Sirocco are sourced from Samsung. I wouldn't be surprised if Nokia would be knocking on Samsung's door again.

Serious? Been waiting years for them to implement a serious mobile version. Did they get knee capped? Sony can implement similar functionality on one sensor.

              Hope he never returns

Jurgen, 12 Jun 2020I don't know if the cooperation with light was really that ... moreOf course they would be nothing in camera department now.
See which manufactures touted as the innovators in camera department nowadays?
Yep, most of Nokia's camera software developers are hired by Huawei, while some others went to Sony, Samsung, and other manufacturers.

Today's Nokia was ONLY in name.
Even ALL their products are made by cheap ODM, not Foxconn.
Cheap ODM like Wintech, etc which make Samsung's and Xiaomi's low-end, are the ones who manufactures Nokia phones.

AFAIK, the only Foxconn-made Nokia products are the tablet N1, and first gen Nokia 5, 6, and 8.

Anonymous, 11 Jun 2020Just work on a balance between sensor size and resolution. ... more"build like 808"? are u kidding me?
HMD will NEVER, EVER make something like that.
Why? because that sensor are made by Toshiba, and Toshiba has closed down their camera sensors division LONG TIME AGO (due to something happened in Japan).

Moreover, the size of that sensors is HUGE; HMD will NEVER allow Nokia make thick phones now, even the 9 PureView was using small camera sensors, see?

If u want a 'true' camera phone, MAKE IT URSELF.
or, just buy a cheap, decent smartphone and a proper camera; a cheap, decent smartphone can be bought for as cheap as 150$ (Redmi 9, Realme 6i, etc), and the rest of ur money can be spend on proper camera.

As of today, not even Huawei can make cameraphone which can rival current's cheap camera digital.

DroidBoye, 11 Jun 2020Even when the pandemic has started, HMD was already struggl... moreActually, no, that's not remotely true.

Today's flagship Snapdragon SoC is not monopolized by Samsung anymore, so you can't use the excuse of "struggling to secure higher tier chipsets".

Even if that is true, Nokia should be fine with making mid-range smartphone with LOGICAL pricing; the ONLY way for them to rise to shine again.

If I were HMD directors, I would focus on making low-end & mid-range products first, as the market of this segment is FAR LARGER than flagships' market (just think what kind of products Xiaomi & Realme are making at first?).

SInce they were DEAD once, they are not some 'big guy' anymore. Just live with it.
They should start from the scratch again, starting from making 'affordable' low-end and mid-range products.
See how Xiaomi, OnePlus, and Realme became such a rising star in such a short time (in just ~3 years, all of them became the most spoken around the world!)?

That's how u should do business, not the way around like what HMD is doing right now.
They STILL think they are the 'big guy', while they don't realize that MOST people now are 'literate' enough to know their desired phone specs, unlike 17 years ago, when Nokia 'recycled' 6600 'music' was booming.

Adjustable DOF can be achieve by ToF, greater low lights can be achieved with one big sensor & pixel size + RYYB.

Light got great prototype system, but lost in more convenient way.

Well I think its a good thing. Pioneers in life try things edgy. The light thing ended up not being so easily accepted though the concept was cool. No reason to be negative. Just move forward.. from some of the hints of things to come, some Nokia phones coming look pretty cool. In the last few years they have already established in tear downs, excellent solid componentry. Personally i'd like to see a new nokia classic, with couple size variants, flat glass front and away from filthy shiny glass backs. Matt finish is much cleaner and classier . No doubt about it.,bring it on.

I don't know if the cooperation with light was really that fruitful. Since Nokia returned in the market the phones are very good in terms of general performance but in the camera domain they are nowhere close to what they were with the Lumia series. I still use my Nokia Lumia 830 for pictures as it outmatches my Nokia 7.2

I still think the N9 camera setup was remarkable. The tech just wasn't there for a smooth performance. A current flagship processor and a large battery would have shifted mobile photography dramatically. I probably wish to see few things from future Nokia phones - reasonable prices, heavy partnership with Mediatek (their Dimensity chips are mysteriously absent), dual camera setup - regular and periscope

Because what they brought was bokeh camera, not mirrorless alternative what many expected. Xperia is close to those now.
