Google Phones destined to go the same way as Nokia. The complacency of the market and delusions of self-importance.

At best it will end up like Sega. Software only.

Very disappointing. I really need a new phone soon. Either Google or an iPhone. iPhone SE2 is out of the question due to its pathetic battery life and the base model of the iPhone 12 is still ages away. Damn it, I don't know what to buy. :(((

IpsDisplay, 16 Jun 2020How can a company as powerful like Google struggle so much?... moreI wanted a good camera phone for the summer, not after the summer. Google really dropped the ball on this. Very disappointing.

They will probably sell 4a, in october and the 5 during new year I guess for marketing reasons. Anyways, its kinda a looser attitude to drop their existing supporter.

Wanted to be different but I'll buy a samsung at least its there.

I think that Google might ditch the 4a altogether, if it's not released this summer. It doesn't make any sense to launch it in october. I just read that Qualcomm is ready to announce the Snapdragon 775 and, by the time the 4a MIGHT be on the shelves, it will be several SoC generations behind.

If they don't upgrade the chip in the 4a, I don't think it has too many chances on the market. The Google brand can only get you SO far.

Damn, what's going on with Google's mobile division??? No wonder the key team members have left the company.

The only thing that makes sense IMO is that Google still has too much stock of Pixel 3a/3a XL that they need to clear out. Pandemic or no, people that need a phone will still get one. Offering something in the lower half of the price spread would be an attractive option - certainly more attractive vs current market competition than the 3a is.

There don't appear to be any plans from Xiaomi to make another smaller phone any time soon. OnePlus has only made one in their history several years ago.

Google dropped the ball hard on this now. My expectation now, and hopefully what Google ends up doing to save the 4a, is that they'll bump the specs up a little bit, but not enough to fight with the 5. At any rate I got tired of waiting and bought the S10e and I'm very happy with it. Great cameras, great battery life, great CPU.

SteveFOX, 16 Jun 2020Google are likely changing the SoC and camera sensor to com... moreI don't think that's possible, even if the rumors saying the device is ready for shipment are wrong, it would still cost them. A smart move would be lowering the price of the 4a and launch the XL alongside the vanilla model, google have already worked on the 4a xl, they just decided not to release it, so it would help them a lot in this case. But remind me when was the last time google made a smart move.

Peachy001, 16 Jun 2020£349 for a phone that has the best imaging in the cla... moreOk, but there is a high probability that a company, like Xiaomi or OnePlus for example, offers a phone with a better soc, a good camera and a premium design. The mi note 10 already costs around 350€ in some markets, and you might say that google's image processing is unbeatable, but even if that is true, the differences aren't really that significant to justify the performance sacrifice. We don't know what OnePlus is going to make out of the Z, and the rumors about the Mi A4 are already speculating a sd775G, the 108mp sensor and android one ofcourse. Now I'm not saying that the pixel 4a is not good, it would've been my favourite device if it was launched by know, but it surely won't have the same value in october.

SteveFOX, 16 Jun 2020Google are likely changing the SoC and camera sensor to com... moreI'm not sure 5G vibes with the philosophy of the phone, there's many a thing that would surely come first given adoption of 5G is still pretty paltry.

In addition I'm pretty confident the shooter of the 4a will be a match for the iPhone SE, if not best it.

That's also ignoring the reports that the products are already produced and ready to ship out, they wouldn't just write them off and rework would be prohibitively expensive.
