Mmmhhh... very intruiging indeed. Hopefully when the full and commercial model comes out, it will have the same specs..
I was wondering though on what is the price tag.

Is WM all that good?? Really?? Version 7 seems quite promising, however 6 and 6.1 seems a little antiquated now.

Im using HTC TYTN right now and pretty happy with it. I didnt upgrade to Tilt coz there was not much difference. Now, I'm looking at X1 and wondering if HTC will come up with competing devise, coz for now, X1's specs look much advanced, the only problem is -- we do not have it in our hands yet and do not know the price we will have to pay.

As much as most people hate Apple and the iPhone, having used SE's UIQ 3, Windows Mobile 2003 2nd Edition and Windows Mobile 5, and currently using a Nokia E90 with S60 3.1, an HTC Touch with Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional and an iPhone, I can definitively vouch for the iPhones User Interface being way way beyond any available UI currently. Yes, having a physical QWERTY keyboard may be a plus for the Xperia, but I don't think Windows Mobile 6.1 will add on any groundbreaking advances to the OS or the UI.

Despite the E90's huge (in the mobile context) 800 x 352 internal screen, I cannot help but go back to my iPhone for browsing, and with the rumoured Flash capability coming, the going will only be up. Now that's another area where current mobile phones have miles to catch up with the iPhone.

Finally, with 3rd party applications and 3G (soon) coming in the iPhone's domain, the lead my only widen. Maybe not in number of units sold, but in the overall usability of a mobile phone.

BTW - Nokia despite its huge 40% share of the worldwide mobile market still stumbles when it comes to as basic as firmware upgrades. I wonder why people crib so much about the iPhone and refuse to write about issues like these. I also had a couple of N95's which I unfortunately decided to update, using all the precautions stated, and ended with one that refused to reboot. It remains a brick till date.

Anyway, the Xperia does look interesting....

              Finally a well said post.

Agree with ThK. posters here (esp the infesting nokia fanboys) criticise like childrens. they even don't know even the simplest of the technicalities about the X1 and they deliberately speak-ill upon it. and the worst of all is that they even criticise an OS that has not yet been announced and tested. what kind of comments thread is this.

God damnit how much rubbish people have posted here!

Ok, the N95/N96 is not comparable to X1. They're in different segments and comparing them would only embarass Nokia. Also, regarding size, the X1 is a bit wider and a bit longer, but alot thinner. In total, the X1 has a volume of 97cm³ while the N95 is 110cm³ The N96 is a bit smaller but still larger than the X1 at 102cm³.

In short, the X1 is smaller than the full-feature Nokias and still beating them on features.

The next one really annoys me. Windows Mobile 6 and Windows Embedded CE DOES NOT have a cap in color depth at 65k. That is simply not true, stop saying that.

                        Windows Mobile 6 (and WeCE) supports pixel depths of 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 24, and 32 bpp. (Source: msdn.microsoft.com)

                        16bits = 65k colors, 18bit = 262k colors, 24bit = 16,7m colors.

So, WM doesn't directly support 18 bit colordepth (262k). Are we fucked? No.

To still use that amazing screen you could either:

                        A) Run WM at 16bpp, then use a standalone graphics chip to enable dihtering and smooth out color transitions to take advantage of the 262k color palette of the screen.

                        B) Run WM at 24bpp, then use the same GPU as mentioned above to take the color depth down to 18bpp in the framebuffer before writing to the screen.

It is confirmed that the X1 has an onboard GPU from ATI. They can easily use it to do one of the two above and therefore utilize the full 262k colors of the screen. The reason most WM phones use 65k is that converting the framebuffer takes CPU cyles. Using GPUs takes more power and costs more. WM doesn't cap at 65k colors, the CPUs and cost-aspects do.

The Xperia seems to be a "no expense spared" kind of project and I'm sure that they'll do all they can to really show off that sweet screen in all its glory.

Also, more directly regarding the article. The screenshots show that the PROTOTYPE runs WM6.1. According to various sources, amongst them, Eldar of Mobile-Review, the X1 will run a WM operating system newer than 6.1 but not WM7. Eldar dubbed it "WM6.5". It is the biggest overhaul of the WM interface over the past years, as it introduces gesture-based navigation, revamped music and video players, support for 3D accelerators and several other amenities.

WM6.1 in Xperia X1? Plain wrong.

As well as Apple with the iPhone (it sucks for me!) and it's not going too bad for them. SE has more experience with mobile interfaces. Just give it a little time...

for those with the TyTn II or Touch etc etc. you can basically flash your device to run the same as the X1. Just go to the Xda website. I have the TMO Wing and hacked it to increase the speed and memory. The only diff is the style and the bigger screen. But to some those mean a lot hehe. But i maybe thinking of getting this one though...we'll see...

Cell phones are like religion, everyone "knows" the truth, and everyelse are a dumb.

My SE history is P900,W800,P990 and I must accept it, smart phones are not for all. Iphone & N95 are just da better phones by now, but lets face it, Iphone is more and ipod with phone, n95 had a better pedigree but lacks of smart phone vision.

SE is equilibrated, UIQ vs WM is a lost fight for symbian, you have office, messenger, live, WMP integrated, in UIQ you must download, install and pray to got the better option.

Resumé, N95 for newbies and nokia believers, iphone for cool richs, SE for IT people... Xperia for me =)

I think the Windows is the best feature of Xperia :) I hate that stupid Symbian. UIQ bla bla. Definitely my next phone. I was to buy n95 8gb for christmas but I postponed, now it will never happen. I waited for n96 but not any more :)
