20 June, 2012
Legacy hardware will be treated to Windows Phone 7.8, which will enable the resizable live tiles.

hahahaha. the hate is too obvious. I don't see how multicore, sd card, direct x and much more support can be ported to something that doesn't even have them. what about ipad owners not getting io6 or "new" androids still waiting for ics... when jelly bean is stated to come out later this year.

explain yourself. atleast they get the win8 experience

Microsoft just shot themself in the foot. And in Nokia's foot as well. I silently knew this would have happened and it did. They can kiss goodbye the future sales of their phones knowing that WP8 users won't get WP9 either (almost for sure)...

love my Lumia 800. Best phone I've ever had. Love everything about it.

Can't wait to get a windows 8 phone. the reality is, I'll enjoy the 7.8 update for another 6-12 months, and then get a really cool WP8. It will look great next to my Microsoft Surface :)

I don't see the problem. In fact - the few people that are moaning about it are the journalists and people who have non-windows phones. Once you've had a windows phone for a while - you love it - and I'm so stoked that Microsoft is taking some initiative, taking some risks and going for it. kudos to them!!!

this is not a fair deal. we wp7.5 owners cant accept this news. we all were waiting for this wp8 update. u guys better release 7.8 with more software updates, except updates which need new hardware like nfc. otherwise nokia will be closed soon by this year.
you guys should bring improvements in text message saving, in built video call setup, better support for IE9, more vibration for a call while silent mode, camera modes etc.

Good thing about Microsoft is that all the devices get the update and run equally smooth, i have my OMNIA7 here and if the update comes to the Lumias this one will be getting it also, and that will be good enough to give me more time to save up for a brand new WP8 device.

Of course people know a new OS won't bring added hardware to their devices, but the point here is that MS is sending the 'You already bough it, deal with it and let us worry about the future customers, we now don't care equally about you now' kind of message.

If I were a Lumia 900 owner, I'd be totally pissed off with this.

I think it makes sense ..... in my opinion all the software features will be updated and all the hardware features (like SD card, NFC apps, HD Games, etc) will be left out for current windows phones.

That is atleast cool instead of completely ignoring the current phones .....

And as far as the new OS ... it has added all the required cool features .. including mukti core, sd card support, nfc .... HD displays .... a very big step which now makes the windows platform stronger and can easily compete with the existing giants Android and IOS ... great job Microsoft .. clear achievement.

Considering that current WP devices don't have multi-core processors and ultra-fast GPU's, it would be impossible to bring all the hardware enabled features of WP8 to our phones. It's a great LEAP AHEAD for the platform and it's a little bit sad that we can't have great apps on current Lumia phones. I am HAPPY that we will get WP 7.8 that will bring new features and will speed up our current phones even more. :) Go Microsoft! :D

How illiterate the journalists can be leave alone other people? You just saw that from announcement that WP8 is more about hardware. New kernel (Windows RT), multicore processors, NFC, SD support etc. Software wise its new start screen, few tweaks to interface, Microsoft IT and very few other features independent on new hardware.
NFC wallet like features are dependent on hardware.
SO YOU CAN'T EXPECT WP8 to run on current WP7.5 devices, no way!
Compromises need to be done. So whats coming to current WP7.5 devices is: UI related improvements like new start screen, updated maps (Nokia maps 3.0 on Nokia devices), voice assistance called 'Audible' (its available to all current WP7.5 devices from today itself), new data management tools (comprehensive Nokia counter app built in on Nokia phones), camera improvements like burst mode, panorama etc.
I DON'T SEE ANY MARKETING GIMMICK BEHIND NOT BRINGING WP8 TO WP7.5 DEVICES WHEN IT IS IMPOSSIBLE.
Instead they are being transparent by bringing whatever is possible in a form of WP7.8. Version naming itself is transparent. They could have called it WP8 itself like what Apple does. iOS 6 can't bring all its goodies to the phones generations apart and still its called iOS6.

So go buy it, it's your choice, but do you know a thing that Android can't do that WP 8 can? And I know lots of them that WP 8 can't do that Android can... Even WP live tiles can be your homescreen on Android if you really like them...

Got a brand new HTC HD7 2 months back. Frankly, I am satisfied with the 7.8 deal :)...It is bringing the primary SW related part of WP8 to the existing devices.

However, I do assume Lumia 900 customers shall be pissed.

Let's hope they won't continue doing this with each big WP release. I can get all previous gen models not getting WP8, save for the Lumia 900 and Lumia 800. Dropping support for your flagship devices is not a good idea. Please improve it MS or you'll face troble in the long term. And to say a good thing, kudos for not letting the carriers slow down the upgrading process.
