Anonymous, 28 Jun 2012Yh true talk. Android is too expensive too use. Besides is ... moreTo which version of Android are you referring? By your vague logic, all technology everywhere is poor for battery life because at some point in the existence of that technology there would have been a moment of poor power efficiency.

Guys, guys, guys..
Stop the whole "android is better than symbian is better" arguments...
They're both different...
It's true, Symbian is dying, and this really is the last hurrah for the OS - all operating systems come to an end, and new ones are born... I'm sure there'll be a successor to Android and iOS and Winmo in due course... but for now it's Symbian's time to depart...
As for Nokia dying - Microsoft simply won't let it happen... if Nokia dies then all hopes of Windows Mobile dies with it... as currently no manufacturer is taking it seriously enough to fill the void Nokia would leave...
What you will probably see is some kind of buy-out or huge cash injection into Nokia for silent shares, etc. just to keep them going through the next few years...
I think operating system wise it's going to become a three horse race... Android at the top, then iOS, then Winmo 8/9 - with RIM somewhere far behind...
And once that settles down, I expect a NEW OS (or two) to emerge as people invariably get bored and want something new and exciting! And who knows, with the tech specs increasing at the rate they are, a breakthrough in technology may lead to a new way of operating our mobiles!
There's plenty of room in the market for EVERYONE and it's all good for consumers who ultimately get the CHOICE...
So enjoy Symbian's last stand, enjoy Android, enjoy Winmo 8 - it's all good!

These are the facts:
Symbian is now as good as Android feature and functionality-wise.
It is BETTER then Android when it comes to speed, when you consider Android's lagged even with dual-cores while Symbian runs smooth with a single core. Image what could it do with a dual or a quad-core.
There are ONLY two downsides with Symbian:
- It lacks official apps. But it's not that bad since there are excellent 3rd party Qt apps for just about any service you might require.
- The browser is OKAY but it's not very good. But again, it's not all that bad since Opera supports Symbian 100% it's very fast.
Now are those downsides a really high price to pay if you get this:
A camera which beats all other smartphones cameras, beats all point-and-shoot digital cameras and even matches the quality of high-end DSLR's in some circumstances.
The best in the world Maps and turn-by-turn voice-guided navigations which works offline and is free for life.
Other awesome features like the FM transmitter, Mass Storage (unlike iOS and WP), sound recording in CD-like quality, battery life which can go on for days if you know how to use it, USB-on-the-go, HDMI support, etc.
And my favorite, being alternative instead of being in the mainstream with all other fandroids and apple fanboys and their fancy toys?

AnonD-44227, 28 Jun 2012not exactly symbian sales were making a gradual loss but mo... moreRegardless, the end result is a drastic downturn in Symbian’s marked share since 2009, and there is every indication to suggest that this trend will continue (if fact actually increase)
I don’t actually think Nokia themselves are surprised by the cool reception the 808 has received from carriers. They would have known for a while now that Pureview technology alone would not be sufficient to re-kindle interest in Symbian as a platform.
It’s interesting to note that (at least to my knowledge) no further Symbian based Pureview devices have even been hinted at by Nokia (development of the technology began years ago when Symbian was still number 1)
I think the 808’s presence on the market is an act (of desperation most likely) by Nokia to show that they can still innovate, if they could have married up Pureview to the current version of Windows Mobile in time for MWC 2012 I highly doubt we ever would have seen the 808.

Ale, 28 Jun 2012I can't believe people are really surprised by this, I reme... morenot exactly symbian sales were making a gradual loss but mostly because nokia was shipping too many devices and saturating the store shelves with them and then pulled back on shipments so the lower amount of shipments made it look like nokia sales were dive bombing but they weren't
in fact prior to Elops "leaked" memo Nokia was selling more devices than they were previous quarters the only problem was Nokia doesn't make a lot off each device and other companies were selling even more phones
It wasn't until after Elop when sales literally took a dive
Having said that Symbian is still the 4th most popular OS in the UK in terms of market share
As for the remark on Data use symbian phones were until very recently the most used mobile OS to go online
The issue here I think is that Nokia wants too much of a cut from the carriers + the dive bombing sales thanks to Elop

Dedicated to all Android Trolls
engadget
"Nokia 808 PureView -- a Symbian-based handset whose software has seen better days. However, OS be damned, it still blew away attendees at this year's Mobile World Congress. Impressive stuff, given that it's the same show where HTC's admirable One series debuted."

GSMARENA, I think guessing the reason is due to the carriers wanting to earn revenue from data tariffs is a massive assumption.
Admittedly I don't have data on revenue created by customers going over their allowance however I don't think you do either. If you do publishing this would be fantastic to back up your claim.

If this is true then its not exciting news for NOKIA, who may end up with a flop phone before it hits the market.
I hope people do buy this phone. Personally I'm Android but I've always had either a Nokia or Symbian up until the N97 and N900. T-Mobile definitely wont subsidise as they rely a lot on their data services, they promote it a lot. Perhaps O2 will re-think.

I can't believe people are really surprised by this, I remember reading the opinions of several tech reviewers just after the 808 was unveiled at WMC and even then they said they would be surprised if this device was picked up in the UK.
The pro-symbian crowd can rant and rave all they like; it doesn't change the fact that Symbian is dead. Nokia has committed its future to Windows 8, and do you really blame them, Symbian's sales have been plummeting for years.
Personally I'd like to see what Nokia can come up with by utilising the pureview technology on a Windows 8 device.
