Sony cares about how many dollars per unit they can earn, not how many units will be sold.
This is why only samsung and huawei do not not lose money selling phones.
They sell many flagships, other brands do not.

I'm guessing it's going to be compact and Premium version of ether Xperia 1 II or Xperia 5 II (along with the phone itself)

I think it was the same value, as a compact phone, but a newer model.
It was only released in Japan I think.
Currently using it now and I think it's great.

But you will have less width, hence it is easier to hold in one hand. But tall is same like other flagships.I blame this on you-tubers for giving false impressions to the viewers that it is taller than other smartphones.

Actually brands like Sony, Nokia, Samsung should bring a lot of mid range phones back in market. Where we can see mostly only Chinese brands are dominating now. But to beat them Sony, Nokia & Samsung should take the barrel to them and not wait for them to come them. I am sure brands like Sony, Nokia & Samsung will be way better than these Chinese brands. It will be very difficult but not impossible. I would love to buy a new Sony or a Nokia phone if available in market today.

I am currently using the last Compact phone from Sony, the XZ2 Compact. It's a great little phone which I am having trouble to let go because I just can't find a suitable compact replacement.

Definitely it will be more taller, only the area of 'improvement' they concentrate nowadays. From 21:9 to 23:9.

Plus its Android, you could put swipe gestures by downloading an app if the stock android doesn't have it. There's no need to swipe all the way from top to bottom(just swipe faster). Even the S20 is pretty compact and that's 6.2" made possible with its fullscreen display. Yes height is a factor but the compact feel comes from holding the phone on its sides. I use an Oppo A9 2020 which is far from being a compact phone but it is still possible doing stuff one handed on Social apps and typing(especially swipe typing).
People want small? S20, A10e, A20e, A40, A41, S10e from Samsung. Pixel 4a from Google and Xperia 5, 10, 10 II from Sony. They're all larger than 5.5". These are the modern compacts you get now in 2020. The most compact being Pixel 4a and A40. With Sony being taller but still compact. Some won't know how compact 6.1" can be until they hold it.

Whats more important is the width. Example the Pixel 3a at 70mm width is a compact phone. Now lets make that phone slightly taller to account for a wider (in landscape) 21:9 screen. You get the Xperia 5, a phone with a 6.1" 21:9 screen with a width of 68mm. The XZ2 has a width of 65mm.
Yes the Xperia 5 is tall and might not seem compact at 6.1" however it does feel compact. Ofcourse with a 21:9 screen ratio you couldn't get as compact as the XZ2c but it still feels nice to hold one handed as it is compact enough. Another great example would be the S20.
