Google Pixel 5 renders show a design nearly identical to the 4a

24 August 2020
Except with an extra camera on the back, of course. The front is nearly indistinguishable and the Pixel 5 will be about the same size as the 4a too.

Fearghast, 21 Aug 2020I tried it, I never want a phone with a periscope camera ..... moreThere have been many instances where I had my smartphone with me, and I spotted something on the distance that I would want to see, without optical zoom, this is not faisable.
Not everyone have a DSLR, and those who have don't constantly have it on them, and you can trust luck to always put something you'll need a zoom to see when you don't have it with you.
For that alone, periscope (who allow way greater zoom than compact lenses) is worth more than wide/ultrawide that I could argue you could simply move back to make everything fit into the frame (I am not saying it is useless, just that telephoto is actually more useful).

Same with portrait that have a significant better face shot capabilities thanks to higher focal length than the main camera, and because of that, you need to take the picture from afar, which mean a combined telephoto (periscope style) and portrait can be actually useful, in practice this mean lenses that can vary focal length but also depth of field, this mean from a periscope camera, you can get both telephoto and typical portrait with long focal length (that can get down to offer a more regular angle, similar to the main camera) with his ideal specific focus distance, while being able to vary it, making it way better than a regular portrait camera.

So for that alone, the inclusion of portrait into the telephoto make it worth it, now, if your lenses setup also allow for really close focus distance, you can also triple that with a macro camera, which also can use zoom.

So imagine a phone with only 2 sensors, a main sensor with zoom capabilities going from short to even shorter focal length to serve as regular up to ultrawide sensor thanks to periscope design allowing lenses setup that can give those high range of focal length, and another one combining telephoto, portrait and macro, it would mean two periscope, but we are saving space and cost here as only two sensors are needed.

I would have preferred a 6" phone around 148mm tall.
At 5.8", it's probably going to have a smaller battery than the 4a due to reduced internal space.

If I wan't to zoom, I want to use decent optics - the quality of every zoom or telephoto is simply unacceptable for me (at least current solutions, hell we do not even have a perfect ultrawide on our phones yet).
If the only thing I have on me is the phone I use better, losless kind of zoom ... I move closer to a subject I want to take a photo.

If your whole world is your room, no vacations, holidays or concerts, than yes, it is useless.

Rainbow spitting black hole wallpaper? Very unique.
But where is the front facing camera? 😂

Try a phone with a 5x/10x periscope zoom sensor, and you'll never want to buy a phone without that. It's that impressive.

How is this different from the pixel 4a 5G(besides the extra camera)?

I thought both have snapdragon 765G.

I love glass back phones, but I couldn't justify spending double the price for a glass back, telephoto lens and a minor spec bump.

If it will have 3 lenses, it will be the standard setup - wide, ultra wide, telephoto.
TBH if they would use ultrawide and the rest would be just a better Pixel 4a, I would consider switching from Xperia "flagship" to this one.

                              YES! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First we have compact iPhone SE2 whose sales shoot through the roof, now we get two semi-compact phones from Google in a row... I guess it's only time until chinese manufacturers join the trend and start offering compact phones, too! What a bliss.
