Hot take: Sony Xperia 5 II

20 September 2020
This phone perfectly embodies Sony – a tech giant known for its music players, cameras, TVs and game consoles.

A great specification sheet except for Sony's lame 5G radios. The Xperia series sells as LTE phones in North America. That's not impressive when midrange phones are starting to support global 5G bands.

The software aspect worries me a bit. Sony keeps showing screen shots of their Imaging Edge Mobile app - an app with such bad ratings that I'm surprised it's still allowed in Play Store. It loses pairing with Sony's cameras constantly, crashes constantly, breaks WiFi, can't transfer RAW files, can't delete previews EVER, and the "live" mode lags by at least 5 seconds. That's their app for a $1000 phone paired with a $3500 camera.

I'd say the best feature in this phone is its ability to directly draw power from the charger bypassing the battery. These are little things that matter. And Sony has always been into the finer details. Early days of Qnovo adaptive charge to retain battery endurance over the longer run, side-mounted fingerprint scanners. Sony was doing this about half a decade ago. Today, the latest iPad has a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. And battery charge management and trickle charging built into most phones as opposed to mere 100w fast charging, which I still think is detrimental to long-term battery life.

I think if they develop an Oxygen or MIUI kind of a skin on Android, with Sony's own sensibilities, attention to detail, aesthetics and take on Android, it could increase uptake and have a developer community like the other skins have. I know lot of you'd disagree, but having something way more than stock Android can be a big plus.

If they cut some GG6 (and do a plastic/metal/pleather back or something) corners to put their flagship camera setup in it, it would be pretty ideal, and comparable in value to the pixel a line.

I really think that Sony has lost its way and is trying hard to find it back. Xperia launch should be announced right after PS5 with game giveaways like they have done with COD. This would help all the multiple tech blogs churn out the news about Xperias too along with PS5 bundles.
Also, a lite model should be introduced knowing you'd be competing with the likes of OnePlus, Oppo, Xiaomi, and, Samsung. According to recent surveys, the mid-range market is the hottest. The availability should be made in all major markets. Sony mobile is struggling hard. They need a brand amassador, a lite version, PS5 bundles and extensive marketing in order to compete.
