Weekly poll: is the Pixel 5 or Pixel 4a 5G your next phone?

04 October 2020
These two have a lot of similarities but also many differences. Are they competitive against other models on the market?

Sort by:

Samsung FE is certainly better device for most users ... I mean by a mile.
Even through I am getting Pixel 5, I can't imagine a lot of reason not to go with FE.
IMHO FE pricing certainly put a lot of phones into a different perspective than a lot of manufacturers would like.

Overpriced, no micro SD on either no headphone jack on the 5, midrange soc. Pixels are, and always have been trash. They are the iPhones of android

I'm getting the Pixel 5 simply because I'm tired of chasing tech. All I want is an Android phone I can use with one hand AND fit in my pocket, OLED screen, more than 24 hour battery, finger print reader for a bit of security (hate face id), 4+ GB RAM, 128 GB storage, and a sub $800 price tag. Anything beyond that is a bonus. I don't care about gaming, I'm not a professional photographer, I just want my phone to work as a phone, and have a little security so I can use work apps and occasionally buy something online. I have laptops, tablets, PC's for everything else that will take more than 5 minutes to do. The "power" of flagship hardware is over kill for a PHONE these days and a waste of money for my use case.

Ali, 04 Oct 2020I would have bought the Pixel 5 for the aluminium back but ... moreI think the point is, the surface was fine until you were told it was plastic, sounds odd to me. It's mainly aluminium, with a small area with plastic on to allow for wireless charging. A must have feature for many, me included. I'd take entirely plastic backed phones over glass, all day long.

A phone with a hole in the display is already bad enough, but when its predecessor had 3D facial recognition and the new one is downgraded to a single puny and useless front camera, clearly that's enough of a reason to not want to poke that thing with a 2m stick.

I tried to vote but it rejected my vote but at least i can write. These 2 phones makes no sense at all for the asking prices. My vote is a capital NO for either of them.

Let's face it, this phone is nothing more than a mess.

nikojas, 04 Oct 2020Why Pixel 5 is much more popular than 4a 5G? Are the extras... moreAbsolutely agree with this. $200 for GG6, 90Hz refresh rate, IP68, and 2 more gigs of RAM isn't worth the extra $200. At least the 4a 5G has stereo speakers AND a headphone jack while retaining the same dual cam as the 5.

5 is smaller and that's probably why people are focused on that (I don't blame them with the rarity of compact phones out there) but if the Pixel 5 (as someone mentioned) was just $100 less and had a headphone jack, it'd be a winner.

But I think the pixel 5 is a total rip-off. Seriously, $200 more for literally a 90hz display and a little bit more RAM?

The pixel 5 has the exact same chipset, same cameras, same fingerprint scanner, same 5G as the pixel 4a 5G.

The 5 is definitely not without its faults but I suspect many people don't want a smartphone the size of a surfboard. Male pockets are not as big as a woman's purse, many brands have completely forgotten this and won't get my money even though the specs would be almost perfect.

The more I think about it the more I think the Pixel 5 announcement is tremendous news for Apple.

They're the other company with the USP of "guaranteed updates for multiple years" and they'll literally be offering an iPhone 12 mini with the same advantage of that and compactness, at the same price, with a drastically faster chipset.

I've not bought an iPhone yet, the Android ecosystem drew me in with the Dell Streak because the 3.5" screens were too small for my clumsy hands, but if the Android world is going to be whiffs like this/Note 20 plus a bunch of Chinese phones at the mercy of geopolitics, I'm preparing for the switch when my A70 needs replacing.
