Bought one in February 2013 and used it for nearly three years. Upgraded to Motorola Nexus 6 after Boxing Day 2015 and have been using it ever since. Nexus 4 definitely felt like a steal.

The Nexus 4 was my first smartphone and still my favorite so far. The 5 was great too. Too bad that no manufacturer has ever even come close to making a phone as good since.

My cousin gave me the Nexus 4 last year. I might have accidentally bricked it trying to install its OG software or anything below Lollipop. The battery is actually decent for its age and no major scratches on the back. Haven't used it since. Nice-looking phone with a comfortable size.
We talk about its flagship SoC but your own nostalgia will sugarcoat past phones. The 765G is only on par to a 835. But at least an 835 is way better than the S4 Pro the N4 had. Most mid-range SoCs of today would slaughter the 820. And why bother with only 2 GB RAM, terrible screen, battery life, and camera?
Nexus 4 is cool to have fond memories looking back at it. But like my Nexus One, no way would I ever go back and use it in 2020. I think any flagship after 2016 is still very usable though if it has 4 GB of RAM. My LG G5 is stored somewhere but if I use it today, it's still a very decent performer even on Nougat.

The Galaxy S10 started at $750 (https://www.androidcentral.com/samsung-galaxy-s10#price) with 6/128GB.
The Pixel 4 started at $800 with 6/128GB.
So,

while

The Nexus 4 would cost $341.43 today adjusted for inflation. That would be like getting a Snapdragon 865 and 8GB of ram at Pixel 4a prices. The prices keep climbing, but the features don't really back it up.

I bought it and fell in love with this beautiful and powerful phone. With the clean google experience...
At the time , it was a real bargain!
Shame that Google later stops selling good phones with fair price.
I had the nexus 5 and 5x. They was still a good phones for the money
After that the price jumps higher. The Pixel arrived.
And now only xiaomi and nokia with "google one" project , are in the price/benefit range for a clean google experience.

Good times, I went through several e960s. A good reminder of how we are at the mercy of the giants and how company visions change over time.
I want to see a revival of Ubuntu phones and maybe some open source handsets but it's likely just a dream

Nexus 4 was a beauty, outstanding ergonomics, it felt so good in one's hand and most people who used one fell in love with it.
We were hoping the Nexus series would continue and keep improving but it didn't happen.
Pixel doesn't catch up today in terms of what Nexus achieved in that day

The phone was quite fast and still is decent to use although even low end phones are faster today.
The camera was bad even back in the day.
The lollipop update made it almost unusable for six months before google provided a fix. Something even caused my phone to bootloop and lost all data. Luckily the phone recovered.
My conclusion is to not buy any further prototype product from google. Better go with some no name brand than a google.

It's very easy now to write an article based on hindsight and now oft spilled hyperbole, but back in 2012 - no one cared about premium design aesthetic, phones were still using removable batteries, and made out of poly plastics, and some still are (yes even after apple went metal n glass for the iPhone 4 - that then changed the industry). but you also need to remember that what cost 250 back in 2012 is equivalent to 300 8 years on.
