Apple iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max unveiled with 5G, larger screens, improved cameras

13 October 2020
The iPhone 12 Pro mostly uses the same cam, except for a brighter lens. The Max has a larger sensor and a longer tele lens.

Anonymous, 13 Oct 2020Apple could have further removed E-waste and saved earth by... moreWay to reduce e-waste:
    - Use the same port as 99% devices in the world (microUSB / Type-C); no way in hell no one doesn't already have one!
    - Use recycled plastic for the back cover & the front glass display; pure glass are fragile & will increase more waste since many sheeps dropped their phones & got cracks on the back/display
    - STOP using paper box; the more box they use, the more tree got axed!
IF they insist, they should use Japan's tech of paper where the paper got some plant seed that will grow when u plant it. I don't buy their BS when they said they use recycled paper; I know recycled paper & its texture. No way in hell that all this time Apple used recycled paper as recycled paper texture are rough!
    - Bring back 3.5mm jack! or allow universal TWS to work on iphone! it's the height of hypocrisy that people should have more TWS when it only increase the amount of e-waste!

Machine learning must not affect raw files as machine learning always guesses, which leads to fake details.
Though Google's HDR+ raw has its own problems. The Imx 363 of the Pixel 3a suffers from a huge amount of dead pixels, which are very annoying when they are in the face of a person (I tried three Pixel 3a, they all suffered from it, but with different severity). Google's software zoom can transform these dead pixels into white curvy lines or bigger dead pixels. The consequence is that raw converters are not able to remove those artifacts.

The effect should be quite obvious and I saw it. Also, there's no way that I can set the SS to 1/2s and shoot blur-free photos with my P30 unless I put it up against flat surface or wall.. In fact that's straight up not possible on most phones that lacks OIS (unless you really have a steady hand, of course).

Only when I chose the periscope camera of the P30 Pro, one could notice the OIS.

P30 has decently robust frame alignment algorithms that helps minimising blurs in most cases, but the effect of OIS is still very noticeable (especially when you're in pro mode and using slower shutter speeds - you can't shoot at 1/15s without introducing blurs on P30 most of the time, whereas P30 Pro is free from it even at 1/4s).

Does the thing behind power button Touch ID like new iPad Air or it just an Antenna ?

It's interesting that Apple now offers RAW output with bracketing in the stock camera app. It could be useful than RAWs you shoot on most other smartphones as it still carries all the benefits from Deep Fusion. I'm interested to see how it stacks up against Google's HDR+ RAW in this regard.

Another thing that I was surprised by was the inclusion of proper HDR video recording, not just 8 bit EDR that Apple has been doing for the last two generations. Just like Sony's HLG or Samsung's HDR10+ recording format, Dolby Vision cannot be played back properly on most smartphones, but it has an upper hand when it comes to the compatibility with TV displays. Still too niche and I can't see anybody using it for day-to-day video recording, though.

Anonymous, 13 Oct 2020RAW video also depend on cpu. Not the video format only. ... moreRAW is actually easier to shoot than H.264, since way lesser processing is required. The issue is that file sizes are enormous, and RED has some curiously wide compression Patent in almost all RAW format compressions over 3x compression or so.

In my opinion Apple should have used the tele camera for the cheaper iPhones, but probably the tele modules are more expensive. It's also surprising that it seems as if Apple didn't upgrade the ultra wide angle camera hardware. The iPhone 11 has the worst ultra wide angle camera hardware on the market. Just speculation, but maybe Apple knows that they want to use a periscope tele camera in the future, so they know that the camera costs will be even higher in the future, hence they don't want to use expensive ultra wide angle camera hardware and then annoy users by replacing it with cheaper ultra wide angle camera hardware in a few years.

My contract is expiring this month and if I renew it for 2 years I can get 1) an S20 FE for around 400 euros or 2) a 128GB iphone 12 mini for probably around 700 euros or 3) an xperia 5 II for around 600 euros (also it releases this Friday so I won't have to wait one more month and there's a good chance there will be extra Sony bluetooth headphones or earbuds in the package).

IPhone 12 mini is nothing but a smaller 5.4 inch iPhone 11 with A14 processor.
Galaxy S20 FE 5g also is a great option at prices cheaper than the iPhone 12 mini.

It is extremely interesting that the 12 Pro Max camera offers sensor shift stabilization. As far as I remember Apple said that you can capture handheld exposures with up to 2s exposure time, this would be quite good. In the future this technique could also allow for tripod photos with extreme resolution and image quality.
I know that certain other phones with large sensors have a very poor OIS. For example the Huawei P30 Pro. There's no difference when you compare the OIS of the P30 Pro with the P30, which doesn't have OIS. One also can not notice that OIS is active at all when you use the P30 Pro, no matter which mode. With other phones it is very noticeable. My assumption is that the P30 Pro has a OIS that nearly doesn't work and its only purpose is the specs list.
