Apple to introduce the first ARM-powered Macs on November 17

16 October 2020
The AirPods Studio, Apple's first over-ear headphones (not counting Beats models) will be the "one more thing" at that event.

Anonymous, 16 Oct 2020Seriously, what x86 uses RISC? All of them are CISC. x86... moreWhile I agree with the performance difference between ARM and x86 processors, I don't think Apple is "digging their own grave". Let's consider a few things. Apple has found success in Macs despite their low market share, which means they've fond a niche. A pretty profitable niche at that. I think ARM based mac is just an evolution of that niche. I mean, why share the profits with Intel and AMD if the average consumer is okay with just an ARM processor handling their excel and web browsing. Then let's consider that their marketing team gets a great amount of bragging room when it comes to selling the battery life to consumers. I think Apple is definitely on to something here.

AnonD-804996, 16 Oct 2020There is no way 15W mobile chip will beat 105W desktop one.... moreIt'll be great for first party Apple apps. Also great for App Store mobile apps. Desktop apps are gonna be mostly fail IMO, but we'll see.

Anonymous, 16 Oct 2020Great news. Desktop Finally headed the right way, far aw... moreSeriously, what x86 uses RISC? All of them are CISC.

x86-amd64 architecture is still the most power house chips you'll ever find, until the next gen of CISC arrives.

15w of 2020 against 105w of 2000 era chipset maybe, but produced at the same year of 2020? You're delusional.

Why would game developers port Windows game to Mac anyway? Mac isn't known as gaming platform. It's very rarely to find any triple AAA titles run natively in Mac. Only some titles do run in both Windows and Linux do to OpenGL or Vulkan. Metal API you mean? Yeah, Apple literally just dig their own graves.

People think ARM is this miraculous magic bullet. It's not. It has some benefits, especially in low power designs like portable devices, but you can't beat laws of thermodynamics with it.

          Great news.

Desktop Finally headed the right way, far away from dated X86.

Though X86 chips mostly use RISC like instructions, one can't think but wonder why they are terrible inefficient nand don't scale well properly.

If Apple proves they can make a 15W A series based Processor perform the same as a 105W Intel Desktop, then that would send ripples across the entire industry.

Urging windows to Fastrack Windows ARM port.

Finally Apple taking a huge leap, and in a meaningful and right way.

But the only worry is whether the open nature of Mac will completely end and everything will be locked in to the Apple app Store just like the iPhones.

Apple locking itself with Mantle API also isn't helping them port Windows game to their OS.
