17 October 2020
At least two new Mate phones are expected on October 22, and we still know surprisingly little.

AnonD-909757, 18 Oct 2020Well actually the Ultra-Wide is the worse possible lens for... moreWhile I agree Poco F2 Pro takes on macro are more like on actual camera, its quality not on par with the rest of the brands that utilized it using UWA lens. Even gsmarena said so - https://m.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_poco_f2_pro-review-2116p5.php 'The camera falls behind only against the higher-resolution ultra-wide cameras with autofocus that some makers use for macro shots like Huawei, Honor, OnePlus, etc.'

Mine is vanilla Mate 20, therefore the sensor size plays the part (still it has nice DOF). Have u seen the super macro results from P30 Pro? Its tremendous. Not to mention when using the 5x optical (125mm) things are got even better with nice natural DOF fallout. The best part about Poco F2 Pro macro are only u dont dont have to go near objects, while using UWA u have to. On a smartphone, I rather has it merge with UWA instead of separate sensor, can give more space for other hardware.

That camera bump looks cool. It's unique. At least Huawei isn't copying some other companies bump design. 🔥

The camera better be worth it

i rarely express my opinions on the looks of smartphones, based on the de gustibus / to each his own principle... but, maaan, this octagonal stuff on top of a rectangular slab, and the dimensional ratios... really, how to put it politely..., different?

the camera cover design is not the beautiful design , but at least that is an original design and idea ,the 5 cameras are far from each other , that makes me think that the sensors are big ones

This might be Huawei's last hurrah if the US-China trade standoff continues after next month's US elections. If it is, it's not looking impressive.

Shui8, 18 Oct 2020Actually starting Mate 20 series, Huawei already has Super ... moreWell actually the Ultra-Wide is the worse possible lens for a Macro, if anything the Telephoto is the perfect one, not only the shorter focal length of an Ultra-Wide mean you need to be way closer than with a dedicated Macro or a Telephoto to have similar results, but the Telephoto, with a proper focus control, allow you to have 3 scenarios :
*Using it at 1x zoom and close focus as a regular Macro.
*Using it at higher zoom and slightly longer focus distance to allow you to take similar macro shots from further away.
*Using higher zoom and closest focus to zoom in on the details as much as possible.

Here are some images showing the relation between all that :
                        http://www.zen20934.zen.co.uk/photography/images/macro_perspective_drawing.jpg
As you can see, the shorter the focal length, the closer you need to be, meaning that a normal Macro camera on Smartphones already requiring a 2cm focus distance clearly do better in term of showing details than a Ultra-Wide could ever dream of.
And even with longer focal length, Macro on DSLR can be taken quite close to the subject :
                        https://cdn.lynda.com/course/111232/111232-637286143201781958-16x9.jpg
You'd need to be less than half a centimetre away with your Ultra-Wide to hope doing something that won't still be remotely close.

An Ultra-Wide is basically a reversed Telephoto, a smaller than 1 magnification.
                        https://i.pinimg.com/736x/fb/b8/16/fbb816b6c2f22fe0ad70a7639f406235.jpg
Since the goal of the Macro is to show tiny details, the more magnification is totally logic.

This excellent article explain how higher focal length allow the same Macro shot from further away, which on living subjects can be useful to not scare them away, but it is also practical :
                        https://blog.sigmaphoto.com/2013/macro-photography-working-distances-by-robert-otoole/

And while this is true that the 2mp Macro camera is totally useless because of its ridiculously low resolution resulting in bad shots as we can see here with the OnePlus 8 who have a 2mp Macro vs the OnePlus 8 Pro who combine it with the Ultra-Wide :
                        https://i.gadgets360cdn.com/large/oneplus_8_pro_camera_macro_1591959615233.jpg

Again comparing the two, we can clearly and easily see how the focus distance is way better on dedicated Macro :
                        https://www.slashgear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/macro.jpg

The 2,5cm isn't the focus distance, it is the minimum focus distance, the depth of field count a lot too, which is why Macro often have a quite shallow depth of field to have way sharper minimum focus distance, as the Ultra-Wide which despite being able to focus quite close, isn't made for that, which result on a long distance before a proper focus area is reached.

Which is the reason why we should have a longer periscope telephoto that have a deep focus control with close minimum focus distance and a good control over depth of field, that way you combine Telephoto, Macro and Portrait (optical one, not numeric artificial Bokeh) into a single camera without any drawback nor "compatibility" issues like Macro and Ultra-Wide.

And I totally agree that low resolution Macro are a plague and need to disappear for higher resolution ones (considering that a 12mp sensor is quite cheap, this is almost a sin to not use one), but the Poco F2 Pro, who is the only smartphone with a telemacro is doing quite good with his 5mp Macro, in fact it probably is the best at taking Macro :
                        https://imgur.com/a/Fi25ixA

Your pics are nice, but they aren't nearly as close as what the Poco F2 Pro can do.
Now imagine using a great sensor for the Telephoto, like an IMX689 and taking Macro with the ideal focus, depth of field and focal length !
It would allow to take that kind of Macro :
                        https://i.pinimg.com/originals/80/c3/4d/80c34d50822cad89542b664160b1e18b.jpg

I am working on a combined lens system concept allowing with a single sensor to have all Wide, Ultra-Wide, continuous zoom Telephoto (with easily over 10x), Macro and Portrait.

Also ToF Flash LiDAR aren't only useful for Macro or Portrait, they too lack in resolution, they need to be pushed at way higher resolution, at the Binned resolution (often 12Mp) to allow a 1:1 depth data map matching to perform many interesting AI related transformations, optimisations and allowing stuff like reframing post capture, giving 3D effect and much more.

And its quality are way better than those 2mp/5mp abysmal dedicated macro lens. So yeah, Huawei doesnt need the extra dedicated macro lens. Its looks like a ToF or even a LiDAR sensor. Judging by their recent marketing, they will have two telephoto lens, 3x optical for portraits, 10x optical for wildlife/sports photography.

Looks like this time around, all Mate 40 series not exactly the same rear design. Pro+ octagonal design, Pro double circular with Leica branding in the centre, vanilla version might be just like Mate 30, minus the ring.

But as always, Mate series still keeps the centric design.

There are many occasions where there are need for zooming in something small, mainly when doing electronic repair/maintenance/build.
And it is actually more useful than a Ultra-Wide Angle, no other sensor can do the same job, while just taking some step back literally can do the same as a Ultra-Wide in a lot of scenario.
