You yourself have an... moredude, do you think processor the only component of a phone?
most people (except of course those who want the fastest and fanciest) rarely upgrade because the processor. it's either because dying battery, memory too small, or ancient Android version that even most essential app no longer supports them (and accident, but let's not talk about that)
do you think samsung S II running on jelly bean can use every apps on playstore if you just throw SD865 on it?

Oh boy... Is this article a tribute to expensive disappointment like LG, Google Pixel, Nokia, HTC, etc??
It may not be mandatory, but will be necessary to who need or simply wanted. It a choice of consumer. No need to justify company simply cannot outrun its competitor.

You yourself have an example of why it is important to have a flagship chip:
If you want to keep your phone for longer, then the flagship chip would have a much better fate down the line, where if you go for a mid range you will feel compelled to upgrade in 1-2 years.

There is still a huge noticable day to day difference between a flagship soc and a midrange one. Even upper mid.
Is it a "must have" ? Well.. for me yes. You really notice it over a day's use. In all the small things.

"The power requirements of a chipset directly influence the design of the rest of the smartphones. Android smartphones started getting bigger not necessarily because people wanted them to but because there was no other option. The more powerful chipsets that had to be put in these phones necessitated a larger battery, so the entire phone had to be bigger."
Ok, interesting theory. But why then we have the Nord with less power hungry SD765G so big? There is Pixel 5 with the same chipset but a less smaller (almost 15mm) then Nord. People just think that if they pay a lot for a phone, it must have a big screen. Or perhaps it is not ordinary people who think so, but only manufactures. Who knows... I certainly hope that the expansion of the phones/phablets (>6.2") will calm down a bit and that we will get more models like Pixel 5. Why? Because we need them, we have to have an alternative, we don’t all want to carry phablets all day long with us.

Total BS. 1+1 Nord is far slower than Pixel 3 in more demanding sites with lots of graphics..

Anonymous, 26 Oct 2020Who speak about a shi*y display, I said a 60hz lcd display ... moreIn my opinion a phone with flagship soc should give most of its processor in terms of hardware and software...else most of the untapped potential of soc gets unused ,else give midrange processor if you are limiting hardware and software potential and hence reduce the price and make it affordable...agree on your part that progression will go on..that is how science and technology flows

If this trend of increasing prices goes, Soon mid-range will be called for phones over 1000 usd/eur by the reviewers.

I agree to a point but not all processors are made equally.
I have the OnePlus 8 pro and it annihilates the comparable professors in regards to speed.
Huaweis Kirin coupled with the Mali GPU is in no way a comparable SOC, so no Moore's law is not here yet and won't be whilst crap SOCs are still in use...
The EU Samsung devices carry the exynos processor, it's bloody awful, sorry but it is, it overheats, it's less efficient, it's not as fast by any stretch of the imagination.
The 765 isn't as fast as the 865 yet it's going into the new pixel?? This will just save companies money even though the savings are going on their pockets, the average Joe won't check on the CPU, yet they're getting less for the same money.
I'll stick right my 865 CPU and avoid the crap from the other OEM's.

AnonD-964130, 26 Oct 2020First of all nobody except ONLY you want a shitty display..... moreWho speak about a shi*y display, I said a 60hz lcd display is good enough isn't it and that's for a lot of people
For Some people a 60hz lcd is not sufficent, but a 60hz amoled
For some who want the best a 120hz or more LCD or AMOLED is the minimum
For some people an hd display is good enough just like the WRITER said sd 765 or sd 660 or 460 is enough but for some even quad hd is not enough and they want atleast 4k
For some people 8k is the sweet spot
So it depends you cannot say that sd 865 is sufficient becuz for a lot of people it is not just like, some people who weren't satisfied with a 60hz oled of the iphone 12 pro max, it is good enough for some people but not good enough for some especially for the price
We cannot stop innovation and technology just bcuz the minority or just SOME PEOPLE thinks that's enough
He spoke only about SOC, but also for display and cameras
I can say that 2018 phones cameras are enough for me
