Used Nokia 6710 Navigator till 2014 as it served me very well till Mobile Phones Displays became much sharper and PPI got much of a leap.
Now I am still using a fast Moto Z Play with JBL SoundBoom loudspeaker and powerBank Moto Mod that extends the already efficient phone battery to 5720mAh!
(Easily lasts for 3 days on 3G Network mode)
Although still running android 8, but the phone feels snappy and I don't miss anything.
what I am looking forward though is the "foldable phones",
I think it is the next Major step, just like when phones switched to color Displays in 2002,
then switched to capacitive touch in 2010.
Foldable phones will be the next big thing in 2020s,
Specially after what we saw from Samsung in The Fold2.

Anonymous, 26 Oct 2020The Article Is Really Good. the problem is with the people ... moreSpot-on. It's quite a well-thought-out and written article. Informative, too. The thing is that majority of commenters here don't like article of this quality. What they mostly like to read is spec, spec, spec and spec. That's why one of the commenter attacked the person that suggested reading a book or learning a new language. That's it! You know the thing with always being on the fast lane? One doesn't get to savor a journey. Always moving at break-kneck speed, in a hurry to nowhere actually important. Addiction would never permit them to look at things from a little differently, from an angle that could end up being better one. Who am I kidding? Most addicts probably don't know that they're addict until told.
Swap SD865 with SD765G, while keeping every other thing constant, and I tell you, about 90% of smartphone users won't be able to tell the difference; and most of the other 10% would have a hard time telling them apart. Even most of these ones here attacking the article; they'd not until they install games like Genshin – or what did they call it?
Do they even know what "necessary" mean? Do they know that it means "ABSOLUTELY needed"? I doubt.
This author didn't even say that flagship chipsets are no longer necessary for gaming phones. He said smartphone. The ratio of people using dedicated gaming phones vs general smartphones out there is lesser than 1:100.
Flagship chipsets are definitely not necessary for a smooth smartphone experience! It's only necessary to those who are either fascinated by games, addicted to numbers, or those who want the very best. Which is quite okay!

I generally don't upgrade anymore until my phone either dies, breaks, gets stolen or - critically - encounters an app that I need it to run, and it can't.
I had a Nokia N95 until 2015, just for context.
After a brief affair with an M2 Note from Meizu I went for a Redmi Note 3 Pro, and was happy with it for a long time - until I bought a car that had an Android Auto multimedia system, and the RN 3 Pro just couldn't hack it.
I then upgraded to my current Poco F1 and it serves me well until today. Honestly I don't game much, but just out of curiosity I installed CoD on it a couple of weeks ago, and it seems to run fine.
Probably won't be upgrading for a while if I can avoid it, but if I do, I will probably go with a midranger like the Poco X3 or whatever succeeds it, because flagships are now way too expensive. I put a $300 cap on my next phone and then try to get the best I can for the money, and I also appreciate a well-rounded feature set. I don't need for 70% of the budget to go to the chipset.
At some point, the law of diminishing returns takes over in every purchase we make.
Does it really make sense to pay twice as much for a 20% (or whatever) performance bump?
Yeah, my old Poco F1 had a flagship chipset at the time, but corners were cut elsewhere - even if the chipset did keep it running nicely over 2 years later.
Today I'd go for a better rounded package.
Maybe a new generation midrange chipset + fast storage for example would be nice.

In the Android world, this makes total sense. Why bother having flagship chipsets for android flagships when it's already proven for like what 10 years now that these devices will never receive any updates/future proofing for more than 2 years.

Seran Mizorogi, 26 Oct 2020This is a pre-emptive strike.
Just about time Apple A14 is... moreYa seen the geekbench scores?
iPhone 12 pro: 4080
Exynos 2100/Snapdragon 875: 4125
Yeah, "heavily defeated" is a huuuge stretch.
P.S: You're talking about the chip, not "real world usage", and geekbench takes into account CPU only. Thus, it is the best for this comparison.
If you want to compare s21 ultra to iPhone 12 pro max, the phones need to release.

What you failed to take into account is that flagship SoCs are usually on a smaller node and are binned.
Flagship chips are more efficient and use less energy for the same task that a midrange chip would use.
The idea that flagship chips are less efficient is flawed and is due to neglecting that flagship chips do more work e.g. running games at higher framerates. They are more power hungry yes but more efficient and use less power doing the same task.
If you want the most efficient chip use a bigger die and reduce the clocks so that it falls on the most efficient place on the voltage frequency curve. Wide designs at lower clocks are almost always more efficient. Just look at 2080Ti which is more efficient per FPS compared to e.g. 2070S.

Harris , 26 Oct 2020If this writer was in charge, humans would still be living ... moreAgree, a 60hz fhd TV is enough, a 200€ phone is good enough, 4gb ram, 16gb is good enough,
Oh wait people lived without phones and their lives were good enough, a 1.8 mpx selfie camera on iphone 1 is good enough as a single rear camera to post a good enough photo in day Hahahahahaha

Plutz, 26 Oct 2020My phone with a snapdragon 412 can go up to 70-80°C.Exactly an sd 865+ can run much cooloer and has much better nattery effiecency than a garbage exynos heat
Despite the sd 865+ is more power hungry
This article is the true definition of NON-SENSE

You want war then, I would say that cameras are not necessary in phones so no need to buy a high end camera phone, I Don't care at all about cameras, maybe I will need them to take a photo of an exercice but any 100€ or 50€ phone can do that with its 1 mpx selfie camera
Wait, not even camera phones are unecessary even all phones are not necessary we can live without them and even we can live without technology like our ancestors and they were living happily
Why we need 120hz ? It is necessary ? Why we need more than 3000mah is it necessary and we can't live without it ?
What a stupid article these 765 phones that you want to make them famous like nord or the midrange pixel 5 or the midrange note 20 will be obsolete after 5 years, do you think we should stop producing flagship soc and midrange soc bcuz this is enough for you only or for some people
For some people 1 main rear camera is necessary so we don't need 150mpw 1/1.28" sensor and another 6 cameras for some who loves photography this is not enough
Can you tell me why nvidia or amd don't stop releasing graphic cards, even intel hd 4000 is sufficient for ONLY PEOPLE WHO DON'T USE IT AL FULL POTENTIAL
If we release a flagship phone on 2020 at 1000€ then another one on 2021 at 1500€ I can easily by the 2020 flagship at 400€ and on 2022 I can buy the 2020 flagship at 300€ or less especially of it is a nearly new second hand phone so where is the problem, on 2025 your 765 will lag a LOT, that's why we need to push flagship soc
If we don't push flagship soc and we still use sd 865 for the next 20 year how we can have higher midrange soc than 765 if we stop flagship soc then midrange soc will also stop of not they will become flagship soc and the price will be flagship price, I can't imagine having good enough midrange soc after 5 years if we stop producing flagship soc and I can't imagine better midrange soc without better flagship soc and that's what make better midrange soc at better price to performance value
Why buying Your PIXEL 5 wich has 3 years old sensors the same as the 2018 xiaomi mi 8 or pixel 3 or 3a for a flagship price pixel 5 has mediocre midrange specs
Its not about soc, a better soc will make the phone better overall, snapinnes, better connectivity and modem and better effeicency, better ISP DSP more recent bleutooth and video recording, playing intensive games, all EMULATORS in your pocket instead of buying a psp, a nintendo switch, a pc, a wii a gamecube and a High end phone to play high end android phone
I CAN BUY LAST YEAR FLAGSHIP PHONE AT 400€ OR LESS AND HAVING ALL THESE EMULATORS AND ANDROID GAMES AND ANDROID FUNCTIONNALITY AND A 120HZ SUPERB DISPLAY
ITS HARD TO FIND A MIDRANGE PHONE WITH ONLY MIDRANGE SOC BUT THE BEST HIGH END DISPLAY AND STEREO SPEAKRS AND CAMERAS AND BUILD QUALITY AT MIDRANGE PRICE YOU WILL STILL NEED TO PAY AT LEAST 1000€
A 50€ DIFFERENCE OR LESS, SURELY MUCH LESS BETWEEN A 765G AND SD 855+ WILL MAKE THE PHONE OVERALL BETTER AND IT DESERVES ADDING THIS SMALL DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LAST YEAR SOC AND MIDRANGE SOC
PEACE
OH WAIT DO WE NEED A 120HZ QHD MEMC 1 BILLION COLOR DISPLAY ? DO EVERYONE NEEEED THAT ? NO
SO WHY COMPANIES STILL INNOVATES AND PUSH LIMTS ?
IF YOU ANSWER THIS QUESTION THEN THIS ANSWER IS THE SAME AS WHY WE NEED A FLAGSHIP SOC
IF YOU DON'T NEED A FLAGSHIP SOC BUT A FLAGSHIP CAMERAS, BE SURE THAT SOMEPEOPLE WELL NEED A FLAGSHIP SOC AND NOT A SINGLE CAMERA, like me I don't need or want at all cameras, a single rear usable camera is "" good enough "" and why these under display camera, why not having no selfie camera
Peace

one thing about high processors is that it heat up easily especially after 2 years of usage. my note 4/5 and even note 10 heat up easily when video calling on app and taking video. if use more than 30 minutes I will have to power off the phone to let it cool down. I have been using smartphone for years and nowadays most midrange phone with midrange processor is more than enough for mobile usage especially on web surfing and multimedia consumption and it depends on individuals, camera specs on this midrange maybe enough may not be enough. recently been using an Samsung M31 i can say the heat generation between it and a galaxy note 10 - lot of difference. speed wise most midrange open up app just as fast as high end phone, web surfing the bare difference of waiting a few seconds more is bearable - the age of continuously waiting for a website to load is over ( when I was using Microsoft's based phone it was terrible but once iPhone and Android came into the scene the speed of loading website became exponentially faster and faster - it's just like the day of dial up modem and laptop of today's the most basic of laptop spec can do the job just as well as a high end laptop in term of web surfing and that is the same for heat as well as high specs laptop generate much more heat ). unless there is a need for specific power e.g. only that processor and the accompanying gpu can power the game properly, I would stick midrange phone and for the price of one top of range phone I can probably get 2 or even 3 midrange phone and I find that is a better decision than spending all the money on one expensive phone
