Ok, everyone is commenting on how silly this is due to the computing power just to drive them, but you have to remember that it can probably be scaled down super easily. Instead of having a display with 10k PPI, this same technology could be used to make displays with 1k PPI, and which is still an EXTREMELY significant improvement.

Not the least surprised to almost only see talibans hating tech advances in the comment section.

All you need is set resolution with a sw, also for hi res you just need to be able to stream that from external hw or cloud, like xcloud...

How many RTX 3090 are required to drive it? ;-) Let's see, it's 625 times more dense than the average phone display right now. The RTX 3090 can drive a single 4K display, so our requirements decrease fourfold. Than means just 156 RTX 3090 graphics cards would be enough! But then let's remember that most Android games are at the very least 20-50 times less computationally expensive than moder PC titles, let's settle on 25. That will bring us to just six RTX 3090 or 340W * 6 just around 2 Kilowatts of power.

Nope, not in 2020. Maybe in 2050 we'll get a mobile GPU which can drive such a display but considering the laws of physics, I'd say never. This GPU must be 500 (!) times power efficient than what we have now.

"You can see the gap between individual pixels because your eyes are just centimeters away from the screen."

                Lol, totally misunderstanded...

Good luck driving two of these in VR headsets using any GPU lmao. Not even dual RTX 5090 could run this at just 30fps...

joe nodden, 26 Oct 2020People seriously don't know how to read. This isn'... moreWrong. It says that this new tech COULD be used for TVs Screens, Smartphones AND VR devices.

It's mini led, stuff what Samsung call it, that's what it is, mini led.

wow that is a good news, can not wait to see it on Oculus Quest 3 :)

Anonymous, 26 Oct 2020If Sony uses 650-810ppi on phones, haters say it is gimmick... moreBecause most people doesn't know that there is a brand called Sony. Sony phones are also good but Samsung phone are popular and if they bring up like this, everyone praises. Can I know what phone are you using? Looks like hater of Samsung.

The article headline is highly misleading. They say that it is POSSIBLE to create a panel with such a high pixel density using "meta-OLED" technology.
We are at the very least many many many years away from even a prototype of such kind.
Also it would take a 4k display crammed inside a 0.43" screen to achieve this pixel density. which means anything VR -size would still have to be wayyyyyyy over 8k and probably 16k or higher. Good luck finding a gpu to push such pixel density. Heck most modern GPUs would still struggle to decode a HEVC mp4 file at such a resolution.

Anonymous, 26 Oct 2020If Sony uses 650-810ppi on phones, haters say it is gimmick... moreTo be fair, anything past 500ppi on sub-7" screens would be perfectly sharp enough that a normal human eye would no longer be able to see individual pixels even at the closest viewing distance.

What makes Sony's 4K screens is that they actually upscale all low resolution contents to near 4K quality, so that its 643ppi would be put to great use, as contents will be noticeably sharper when seen as a whole on the entire display itself, and that's what the difference is between 4K and non-4K phone screens.
Samsung and many others are just all about boosting that colors to the max, but they never really cared about having an excellent processing techniques to enhance the quality of the contents to match the high resolution display as closely as possible.
There's absolutely no doubt about why it is that good. Their Bravia TVs have some of the best picture quality after all, if not the best one in the world right now. They're using LG OLED panels for their A1E but their more advanced X1 Extreme processor is really taking things to the next level.

People seriously don't know how to read. This isn't for smartphones.
