He also thought that every home would have a Mac.
We all know how that turned out.

Basically Dolby Vision introduced from Apple on their phones is a gimmick and not that useful as being marketed right now.

True HDR video recording can be supported only on smartphones with sensor that support "single frame HDR". It's vivo X50 Pro+ and Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra.

Apple is all in from this year with iphone 12 rec dolbly vision bec all the arm based mac will support it, even more with the upcoming mini-led and micro-led
So apple is investing all in , in the only future that there is
Others can supp more or something else until micro-Led will become a thing in every tv, laptops etc
Like Steve J said, why pay R&D for supporting flash into iphones when the future is HTML5!?
Let others to support a future dead end tech

tl:dr
Its like adding tweeters and subwoofers, but since we just invented those, almost no sound is recorded with such high and low frequencies, we've been living with no depth or realism to this day...

new NextGen consolesXBox Series X and PlayStation 5? Not looking for Extremely expensive, but don't want to cheap out either, cause won't be upgrading for a while after that.

Anonymous, 08 Nov 2020ivhave tv with hdr 10 and hdr content from netflix is very... moreThe problem is you TV. All TVs say they are 4K HDR. This only means they can playback HDR content. Only a few TV's can actually show good HDR. Mostly high end QLEDS and all OLEDS. I have an LG C9 OLED and Dolby vision/HDR is a completely different league! My samsung 4K "hdr" TV upstairs when playing the same HDR videos just looks worse than SDR. So it's your TV not the technology.
It's like saying your phone can playback stereo music but only has one speaker and you come back and say stereo is bad and you couldn't care less about it lol.

While Rec 709 coverage is still enough IDC 3 is desirable. While 600 nits (peak) is something what i would call entry Lv minimum to really see HDR 800 is desirable while things get only more impressive as it goes more up. HLG transfer to display ability is a very useful for non HDR inputs. Panasonic is not considered as the best because they use better panels or any kinda of magic in it's processing but because they take calibration seriously (otherwise they software can be described as confusing and sub pair in additional & smart capabilities). In the end this day's you can buy an entire lv TV model with real minimum HDR requirement panel which looks rather good for as little as 500€ (Panasonic TX-50RX810E for instance).

Anonymous, 08 Nov 2020ivhave tv with hdr 10 and hdr content from netflix is very... moreIn this case, the television is tone mapping the HDR peak brightness by bringing down the average picture light level to fit within its own maximum panel brightness to preserve highlight details. This will cause the entire image to be dimmer if the TV's peak brightness isn't very high. It's not an issue with the content itself but rather how the TV is handling it.

Anonymous, 08 Nov 2020Just a little correction: iPhone does not capture video in ... moreThanks for bringing this up. I did notice while going through the metadata of some of our sample footage from the iPhone 12 review units that the base layer was in HLG. However, for the sake of simplicity and the lack of detailed information from Apple, I just went with calling it Dolby Vision as that's what the final output is recognized as on a playback device.

Just a little correction: iPhone does not capture video in Dolby Vision cause Dolby Vision is not acquisition format. Dolby Vision is post process workflow. iPhone captures HDR video in HLG format, Apple's custom LUT is applied and then it goes through DV Profile 8.4 post.
Profile 8.4 does transfer in Gamma not PQ so it's very similar what Xperias have been doing in CinemaPro by letting you choose LUT. Dolby Vision is super flexible delivery from BD 12bit mastering to HLG 10bit broadcasting or web streaming. Dolby Vision does not guarantee you image quality, image quality comes from equipment and post that comes before Dolby Vision delivery.
