The Apple M1 is the first ARM-based chipset for Macs with the fastest CPU cores and top iGPU

10 November 2020
A 5nm chip with 16 billion transistors, this chip has twice the CPU and GPU performance of the 10W chips that Apple used in older Macs.

Apple did not label its power-performance graphs with specific numbers.

Also what "performance" and "power" is apple talking about in their graphs?

Apple not being specific makes those graphs more of marketing than serious performance

How tf is an OS meant to used exclusively on some specific computers "versatile"?

    Have heard of Linux?

Linux is used on ARM supercomputers and HPCs, x86 supercomputers and HPCs, "normal" servers, HEDTs, desktops, mobiles and possibly embedded.

Linux is the most versatile OS.

The only thing that comes even close to linux is windows.

Creative apps dont objectively run better on mac than windows

anybody, 11 Nov 2020Why comparing 300W usage device and 10W power usage device?"Why compare a 10W gpu to 300W gpu"

Ok, so why is everyone comparing 10W M1 to 15W-45W intel and amd cpus then?

If you can compare cpu of M1 to intel and Amd cpus, then i guess you can compare gpu of M1 to gpu of xbox/ps

Basically windows/linux is the OS you can find from supercomputers to HPCs to desktops to mobiles.

That way windows/linux is the most versatile os.

Not to mention that windows/linux is not tied down to hardware of some specific company like mac

FP16 is suitable for computers. Modern GPUs perform FP16 at twice the rate of FP32.

Apple is probably quoting the FP16 or integer throughout. So it's either half 2.6 Tflops or 1/4 that figure.

                That's not impressive.

iOS-Never-Again, 13 Nov 2020Only people who are have traditionally used Apple software ... moreThis is incorrect. A mac is the most versatile laptop to buy. You can boot natively a mac with windows, linux and many other OSes. The only software you can not use is like Microsoft proprietary software that will run on windows only. Microsoft is widely used in the business world but most of the apps are mobile or browser based. Therefore there is no reason for someone to limit in windows only unless there is a special use case. In addition if you learn to use a mac the usage is very similar on linux too.
In addition, there is so much free software for Mac and Linux that you will save you a lot of money. The software quality is far better than ever windows dreamed.

iOS-Never-Again, 13 Nov 2020Only people who are have traditionally used Apple software ... moreI disagree; I use all kinds of non-Apple software to manage and edit media documents. I work in IT, and the last thing I want to do after 10+ hours is to have to screw with a computer. macOS affords me that luxury; Windows is designed around creating a large ecosystem of third-party support and maintenance personnel. Linux was created by guys who like to screw with computers, so it's no surprise that they created an OS that (shocker) requires they screw with computers.

Anonymous, 12 Nov 2020True for gaming but most photo and video professionals use Macs. Only people who are have traditionally used Apple software for editing photos or videos are using Macs since they don't want to invest in the learning curve for Windows photo/video editing tools and other software.
Other people who aren't reliant on Apple software, use Windows.
