Microsoft delayed production of the Xbox Series X and S consoles to get the full RDNA 2 feature set

25 November 2020
Sony started production earlier and so the PlayStation 5 missed out on a few features of AMD's latest architecture.

I am highly impressed with what AMD has shown now they need to sort out their software stack give us new encoder features like RTX voice and RTX studio.
The fact that AMD has gotten this level of performance without going to a denser node is staggering 2x the performance as 5700xt and 60+ % increase in performance per watt is madness the future is bright and competition is good for everyone.

Anonymous, 04 Dec 2020I don’t think you really have a clue what all the geometry ... moreActually I do know what I'm talking about, where your rudeness and lack of details proves you don't.

The Geometry Engine processes geometry, i.e. polygons and not pixels. The clue is in the name! Therefore GE functions such as dynamically reducing polygons in an object with distance will result in improved performance and the eventually elimination of object pop-in.

Rasterization operations, i.e. processing and displaying pixels, are done by the GPU and hence functions such as VRS dynamically reduces the pixel resolution in the screen to reduce the amount of pixels being processed without a noticeable drop in quality, hence improves performance.

So my replies are not a criticism or an attack on either console, they BOTH will have their pros and cons, I'm merely stating the facts as we currently know them to be.

Right now, the facts suggests the PS5 does not have VRS, and no amount of denial is going to change the GE into a pixel shader, so no VRS via the GE.

If the PS5 does have some form of VRS, then how and where it implements it remains to be revealed.

But until that happens, then it is fair and correct to say the PS5 doesn't have VRS.

Anonymous, 27 Nov 2020vrr and vrs are 2 diff things, vrr is used for tearing and ... moreClaims of VRS via the geometry engine is false. VRS is about improving performance by reducing pixel shading requirements (only confirmed for the XBox), whereas the geometry engine is about polygons and hence performance can be improved by lowering the number of polygons needed (level or detail, or LOD) which is common to both consoles.
By definition, reducing the number of polygons will reduce the amount of pixels processed in total, but that's not the same as VRS which can still be applied on top of LOD optimizations on the XBox

Anonymous, 26 Nov 2020People don't understand. "Full RDNA 2" just ... moreThat's not true at all about the missing features, especially when we're talking about GRAPHICS CHIP architecture and technology, not general workstation and personal computer tech.

The claim you're repeating was made up and parroted by PS fans, and yet none have even stated a single RDNA2 feature missing from the PS5 that is supposedly relevant to PCs only.

Variable rate shading is just one of the missing features which is all about graphics. Mesh shaders is another RDNA 2 feature missing from the PS5 that is all about graphics.

And given that the PS5 and XSX are using the same AMD's CPU and GPU tech (with the XSX being more later GPU tech) and super fast SSD drives, then any claim of one console being a PC applies equally to the other.

Both are superb new consoles that devs haven't even stratched the surface their with launch games running on last gen games engines.

So enough of the consoles wars please and lets enjoy the fact that these new console are true next-gen machines :-), unlike the XBox One and PS4 upon launch in 2013.

People don't understand. "Full RDNA 2" just means PC compatible. Much of RDNA 2 is not beneficial for gaming. Really the Xbox is just a PC and that is what MS wants. Fair enough. Sony is still making a console and all that that means. A console is what I want, not a PC. I'm happy for the Xbox fans and they are no doubt happy with their Xbox.

Anyway we will see in few years which one is better. I would guess PS because Sony has a very good track record. Sony time to time proved that games look better on PS than Xbox despite a little less power. But it can change and we will see.

The xbox is harder to develop for simply because Microsoft made an entirely new SDK and tools while sony is using the same basic sdk from the ps4 so getting results is easier which is probably why we are seeing launch titles perform just slightly better on the sony side.
