Apple gets fined $12 million in Italy for its water resistance claims

I find this odd since Apple is the first company to reach 6m deep of water-resistant. Maybe Apple meant for underwater use inside the swimming pool only and not sea water.

should be every iPhon... moreActually not, the money is taken by the the antitrust authority. And that is a bad thing.
The good thing is that brands will usually change behaviour of keep getting fined, and usually the consumers can use the antitrust measure to sue for a compensation, usually started by consumers associations, but no consumer will take anything if he doesnt act.

The code of misleading advertising, art 2, says 'advertisements has to avoid any statement or representation able to mislead the consumers, even if they are omissions, ambiguities or exaggerations not hyperbolic'.
Redbull case isnt punished cause it is a hyperbolic exaggeration, that is allowed under this rule. The ratio is that what is considered obviously impossible isnt able to mislead a consumer. The obvious is under the law rule of the good father diligence.
I think this is a good thing if makes brands change how they handle water dmg warranty(that is basically no warranty), but it should be applied to all brands, cause for example samsung does the same.

We've had water-resistant devices for quite a while and they ARE covered under warranty. Look at Garmin watches for example, I had a friend whose watch failed well outside the warranty (after 5 years, in a pool) and they fixed it at no extra cost.
If apple refuses to fix devices which are water damaged, they should not say their phones are water-resistant. It's like claiming to have a 2-day battery life but you only get 1 hour, because you did not use it in the intended way.

Just because phone is dropped in some water in a commercial, that doesn't just mean you're suddenly entitled to repair of all and any water damage. It's just a frigging ad. The certified IP ratings just mean it SHOULD survive that, it doesn't mean it'll survive with a guarantee. Because IP ratings are given under very specific conditions. It's unlikely they'll be met exactly in real conditions and when they don't, the protection may fail. And before idiots rush to say I defend Apple coz I'm a fanboy (just GSMArena things), I'm applying this to any brand. None ever guarantees anything, they just show it has certain protection that might help.

Never put or drop your phone in water. Water resistant or water proof or something else doesn't matter.

If i make a hamburger advertisement, i have to write in bold font, this burger contains soy! Else what if someone dies from eating it without knowing it have soy.. No, everyone eating that burger need to hold up their medical cards to say they are ok to eat it?
People need some common SENSE. If you do not have, its perfectly OK to fall for it, and LEARN from that.

Apple has the best water resistance out there but its not something fully trusted anyways. They cant provide liquid damage warrantee because of the uncertainty of the situation that caused the damage. And its also very expensive since if water gets in the phone it corodes everything making it unusable as is.

nothing new,iphones are not water resistant at all,they claims for 12 series should be consider as joke,the water first penetrates between the glass and plastic frame-stupid design and sim tray is the other location despite the rubber sealing there
