Anonymous, 03 Dec 2020Market dont reflect much of anything these days when there ... moreAh, I see you're a man of culture as well.

This is exactly what I told him times and times again, he doesn't even want to consider it as being maybe a possibility to potentially reflect a tiny portion of the reality.

Btw, somewhere in the middle of your comment you've answer your own question very well.

Anonymous, 03 Dec 2020Market dont reflect much of anything these days when there ... moreIt is not because they dont have a choice, but because they dont care, and the phone brands also, majority of people dont care if a phone hasbigger or smaller notch, punch hole,or anything else, the only people possessed with that kind of stuff are us, the tech enthusiast and people who are using their phone as only source for multimedia consumption.of course there needs to be more diversity, but unfortunately the majority of consumers just dont care. I have worked on a electronics department and literally 99% of the customers just don't fave a clue what is the best value and what they need. Simply asking what is the best phone or which phone is the best for the money they can pay. Nobody bothers about specs, display type, cpu, ram.
But again, OEM'S make what sell the most, and to some part it is the consumer's fault.

AnonD-955101, 03 Dec 2020It is obvious, the discussion about thinner bezels was arpo... moreOh no, not you again.
1 : Not every smartphones need to be bezels-less.

2 : Not everyone wants bezels-less smartphone, in fact more people prefer having good old bezels over Punch Holes and Notches, there are a bazillions polls proving it.
It is not a small group, a lot don't want under-display camera, holes and notches, the same goes for the full display design in general.

3 : There are many valid and justified reasons to not have a bezels-less smartphone, including for many people who hold their phone in a way causing them to have many accidental touches, because not everyone holds their phone the same way, there isn't even really a "main" way.

4 : There is a seriously consequent difference between what the smartphone industry make and what people want, the removal of the 3.5mm Jack is a great example of that, 2Mp sensors is another.
And as I have already explained countless times to you, there are reasons for that which are totally unrelated to customers' demand :
4.1 : Whenever someone wrote about any non trending feature, regardless if it is the greatest or the worst idea in the world, there will always be the same arrogant and self-centered egoistic people who will criticize it because they, themselves don't want it, as if few different devices from their own tastes would prevent them to have what they want despite the opposite being true which is the exact reason why someone asks for alternatives in the first place.
Result, there is so much constant useless and unjustified complaints that no company ever would lose time and money to sort through all that to find out if the proposed idea is genuinely hated or bad or if it is just typical haters who spit on it for no reasons.
4.2 : It is simpler and less expensive to do exactly what other already do, except for a few new things from time to time.
4.3 : We live in a world where innovation is almost dead.
4.4 : People will buy anything anyway if it is well enough marketed and/or come from a big/recognized name.

Now combine all that and you get the reason why the Smartphone market is that way and why it has absolutely nothing to do with demand or what people want.

It isn't about R&D, making punch holes is actually costlier and more complex than putting a pop up or a good old bezel.
I usually use cars as analogy because it makes a great example for all the different aspects they can be compared with, and because cars are an everyday life object that basically everyone is familiar with.
Here is no exception, look at the smartphone market vs the car market.
Cars come in all form and shapes, you have many body and chassis types, you have :
Sedan, Coupe, Sport, Hatchback, Convertible, SUV, Minivan, Pickup truck, 4x4, trucks, Minibus, Supercar/Hypercar, Roadster and a lot more.
Each come in different sizes, there are some SUV that are as small as some Hatchback for example.
On top of that, they come with different motorization, not only different types :
Diesel, Petrol, Hybrid, Electric, even some LPG/Autogas, Hydrogen and other special Biofuel, Ethanol or Methanol, etc.
But they also have different engine power options.
Add to that some special cars, like a more sporty version, like the Renault Mégane RS or Clio RS, FWD, RWD, AWD variants or 4WD for off-roads.
Then you can still add a LOT of variation still, between plastic, metal, leather, wood carbon and other materials, special audio setup, a huge list of options that is bigger than the list of different features a smartphone have.
And even there, we are only touching the most common things.
Also, remember that a car cost a LOT MORE to produce than smartphones, each model have to go through a lot of testing and really strict certifications that unlike IP rating, aren't optional, there are some on smartphones, but there are much more here, there are many tests, including crashtests.
Yet, there is a huge variety, it is hard to not find what you are looking for, even I who is quite difficult to satisfy I know a lot of cars that I like, from Maserati SUV to good old soviet Lada Riva, original and new variant of the AE86, Toyota Supra, Citroën DS5 and DS7 which aren't old, special, historical, luxury or anything special, those two are just cars I like.

Now come to Smartphones, it wouldn't be hard to make the same phone with a pop up, a bezel, a punch hole and a notch for example, those are minimum changes that really tiny difference is required to handle them all, both in terms of software to the phone's body.
Different size of the same phone is basically the same, swapping height and width for thickness to keep similar battery capacity and the same components doesn't require any software modification except maybe for some display final tweaks, and with a basic body type or a standard internal layout it would be so easy to handle those variations.
Yet, we still have almost a single phone type :

Approximately the same size and thickness, quite similar camera layout and setup and great chances to have one or two 2Mp sensors, 90% of chances to have either a punch hole or a notch and almost none for other options, if it is a high end 50% of chances of curved edge display and low chances to have a 3.5mm Jack.
There, in less than 300 characters/65 words I have described the almost entirety of the Smartphone market.
And I hope, that with all the people clearly stating they are annoyed with X or Y constantly chosen thing over other existing alternatives, many wanting the bezel being back on the market, many asking for pop up, many totally exhausted of curved edge displays, so many who are totally bored by the notch and punch holes, almost everyone who has enough of 2Mp sensors since so long that many phones were not even on the idea phase at this time, so much people hating how they don't include the 3.5mm Jack.
So consistently, so often in so many occasions, and with so many people desiring totally different smartphones like Rollable, Foldable, special like the LG Wing, but also all those who buy featurephones and even dumbphones, all the people who buy Sony Smartphones and iPhone SE and with how they sell well.
With the commonly used phrase of "Smartphones are boring now".
Don't tell me, with all that, that "everyone" or even "the majority" want this single type of phone.
And we aren't even talking about how many people actually don't want anything but just buy whatever else most other buy, which is the vast majority of people that don't know the difference between a SoC frequency and a Ram quantity or even the difference between 3G, 4G and 5G.

So, no, for something which doesn't require that much R&D that quite a few people made their own at home, except if we talk about top tech like extreme camera sensor like the IMX689 which have a totally new tech, or underdisplay camera and other things like that, there are no justifications that only so few differences are made.
You are only projecting your own tastes and desires and how you view them, while being totally biased by a singular market model only there because whatever you do will still sell exactly because there isn't any real alternatives, to think "everyone" want something or that the market have a direct response to them.
As I explained, the car market do work from customer demand, and any other market who do this also have a lot of diversity, which is the opposite of the smartphone market and it is quite easy to see based on so many peoples who are almost begging for something different that suit their need and that often is a quite realistic request.

But once again, I feel like I explained all that for nothing...

are they referring to pixeled fraud UDC? ahahahahah

AnonD-955101, 03 Dec 2020It is obvious, the discussion about thinner bezels was arpo... moreMarket dont reflect much of anything these days when there are no choices. There are people who want popup cam but the phones are not in there market or dont fin in there price budget. There are people who want bezelless screens on phone but not a big phone like we only have right now so what does the R&D do exactly based on the market ?

I dont know that people really want a notch, teardrop or hole in there screen, but market is full of only these options and there are nothing different. So people buy these hole in the screen or cut out and live with it cause they have no choice.

I want something as most maximum 140mm tall phone that dont have bezels and i really dont care about the selfie cam as i have never used it on any of my phones. For me best option would be a popup or under display selfie cam as i dont like the notches or punch hole cause that is wasting the screen space and renders pretty much 5-10mm of the top edge to useless. But market has 0 choice for me cause the r&d just dont work and dont understand what market wants. People buy these 6.5 inch screen phones cause they have no other choice. Only choice they have for smaller phone is iphone 12 mini but thats stupid expensive and not practical . Even low end phones dont have small size for people who need a phone for only communications and maybe sometimes brows info for what ever if they dont have access to bigger screens. There are some of these 2.5-3.5 inch screen phones but they are too low end phones with something 800mah battery and very low end cameras while these cost around 50-100 euro too only. i would like to have a phone like Meizu 16 but with smaller screen like 5.5inch at most

The target was always to reduce or eliminate the bezels as much as possible, and with the majority of customers looking for a bezelless uninterrupted display it is obvious that this will become reality since the beginning. Most people want full display phones and some small group of people want pop up and any other solution.
And the market did the same, all OEM'S are pushing for full display phones and some of them are still making devices with a pop up, small bezzels, back display.
Nobody is willing to risk and put their r&d on devices that don't sell realy well.
The market reflects what sells and what people prefer. There is nothing wrong with that.

Under-display camera, the thing that would be nice if it was just one among many other designs for front-facing cameras, in a well-balanced market.
But the industry will try to put it on as many phones as possible, as they did with the punch hole, because who care about diversity, right ?
Everyone overhypes this thing despite that in all the pictures we saw from it are literally the worst pictures from a recent smartphone's front camera.

And under-display camera or not, I'd advise peoples to avoid this phone and to rather take the next (regardless of the brand) smartphone with under-display camera instead, this one is just a beta test people will pay to participate, and will never get the final product.

You are using devices with front facing camera that is constantly capable of snapping pictures of your faces all this time and with no possibility to see if it's activated or not in the background.
But for some reason you are afraid of under display camera that it can not take any pictures if the puxels are not turned off and you can see if some app is activating it in the background.

I really like the existence of this phone. However, I do hope they add a way to disable the selfie camera via hardware like a switch on the top that slides a thin piece of black plastic under the display blocking the selfie cam. I'm hoping they find a way to fit more things like scanners under the display to allow face unlock without the selfie cam. Like FaceID with its sensors.
