Good move for Apple and definitely a big L for Qualcomm. For sure other smartphone manufacturers except Huawei (Kirin) and Samsung (Exynox) will be encourage to develop their own chipset sooner or later without paying enormous monetary patents to Qualcomm. In addition, great move for Mediatek too for having progress with their own chipset.

[deleted post]and android manufacturers have to "beg" qualcomm for chips.

              Yeah right.

The hipocricy these days are hilarious.

The less marketshare Qualcomm has the better, if you wondered why prices on phones in the last few years were so outrageous, it's partially because of their processors

And except for the intel era, they had no major issues with external modems.

As a company, they needed to balance the cost of buying to other companies vs the cost of R&D in order to implement their own solution.

Anonymous, 11 Dec 2020Well Mediatek already has a great inbuilt modem solution. ... moreMediatek has years of advantage. And their modems werent even great in the beginning.

Apple needed talent and expertise (which is why it bought intel's division in the first place), otherwise you could end up like Samsung in the custom-core race: you have a solution, but is nowhere near as good as the others.
