Purposely stop updating a device that literally exists for having timely and regular updates coz our entire lives are on them and having them outdated is not just stupid it's downright irresponsible. Sure, they totally don't with shitty 2 year updates... And then you give examples of microwaves and fridges that literally don't care if they are 1 year old or 10, they perform their primary task equally across their entire life. Same can't be said for a device that literally costs multiples of microwaves or fridges...

It is users c... moreTo be fair, smartphone developments are higher on a yearly basis compared to other electronic devices, but of course if it's an expensive high end phone, then there's definitely no major reason to upgrade in just a year, unless the user really has a lot of penny to spend on a new hugh end phone every year.

To get phone that is 0,0001% faster, takes 0,001% better photos and have weaker battery life.
Having android 7, 8 or 9 right now does not make your phone any worse.
People do not buy new TV early.
People do not buy new fridge early.
People do not buy new microwave early.
What's the need to buy new phone early?

Android 7 or later does not work on 32bit cpu. Few phones with SD801 were going to earn android 7, but could not.
Qualcomm also needs to extend support for each CPU. They do based on how many units of each CPU are sold. The chips from 6xx and 7xx sell much more than 8xx.

This will NEVER end up having the results they claim. No one is ever going to hold device manufacturers accountable. Qualcomm and Google should as a responsibility to their customers however there is no money to be made. So this is largely a hollow gesture to get consumers to feel like the big boys aren't the problem. This is also a two part issue in that Carriers are often directly responsible in the USA for devices not getting security updates or OS Updates to devices.

I think they should give unlimited android and security updates (unless it really doesn't work with the latest android)
The galaxy s3 (back in 2012) is fine with android 11 with a custom rom so there is no good reason to stop updates unless it makes the phone unusable
I hate buying phones every 2 years its a waste of money

Where Android vendors just want to you to upgrade their expensive devices every year if decision was on them. Luckily Google forces them to do at least 2... Which essentially means Android that ships with it and 1 upgrade. Preferably with months of delays and ending up being really broken and shitty just so you are fed up with it and buy new phone in the end anyway. I generally didn't stay with any Android phone for longer than 2 years because knowing my OS is already out of date and missing things was so stupid and annoying. No such thing with iPhone, even if I miss out some specific things only actual new models get. I still get all the major things and that's enough.
There is some good news though as I've seen news about Google and Qualcomm delivering up to 4 years of updates on new devices. But that's just Google and Qualcomm. How much 3rd party vendors using both will honor this is another matter. At 4 years, I'd be willing to return to Android. I'd still prefer if it was 5 years so you can basically take updates out of equation as something to ever worry about but oh well. I wonder which vendor will be the first to offer 4 years through this...

Not only should it be for the flagship, but do something for the lower tier Android devices as well.
Entry level: 1 OS upgrade + 1 year security fix updates
Lower mid range: 2 OS upgrades + 2 years security fix updates
Upper mid range: 2 OS upgrades + 3 years security fix updates
High end: 3 OS upgrades + 3 to 4 years security fix updates

Iphones get so many updates just because apple gives you only small updates. This year was the biggest iOS update( widgets on the screen haha from now on iOS users will not get anithyng useful for another 10 years ) On Android you notice from a mile away that you got a major os update ; also you get much more features.
