2020 Winners and Losers: Asus

04 January 2021
Asus just put-out a handful of devices in 2020, but, in our mind they were all winners in their own right.

Lol Add all of this together and you end up with a lineup that has limited potential and then it's even unable to maximize it. Don't get us wrong - we really appreciate a company that only delivers great phones, but at the end of the day they need to do a better job of getting them into people's hands.

Asus ZenFone 7 and the Pro version are on sale across Asus Europe. The ZenFone 7 is 499 euros and the Pro version is 699 euros. I checked on Asus Belgium and Asus France. I also seen the global versions come down considerably in price on AliExpress and gearbest.

I think it is a good time to buy one with the price dropping, which is good news.

Asus does not officially sell phones here for some reason, so just like with Google Pixel (same reason, import only) phones they are very overpriced (Pixel 5 is roughly 780 euro, ROG 3 is 810 euro)

But where Asus is niche so they have a excuse, Google is just being stupid (they never sold Pixel phones officialy here, but they did officially sell Nexus phones back in the days)

AnonD-972548, 04 Jan 2021Is the same like Sony phones to some extent. And like Sony,... moreFun part is that even in Taiwan, xperia are more popular than asus cellphones.

3 million devices per year is not bad. Could be even worse like Asus and HTC.
1ii is the main seller. More money pe unit than having midranges as their #1 seller.

But now, the prices have come down a lot (I don't know if it's because people did not buy it or something else). In Czechia you can get the Asus Zenfone 7 with about 570EUR, new. I still will not buy it, at 630EUR you can get in here the One Plus 8T, which I think is a better phone. A lighter and smaller one for sure, lol.

Still, for those who usually buy more expensive phones, is good that the competition exists.

I don't think ASUS cares if their phones don't sell. They make their money off PC hardware and peripherals. Apart from the ROG phone fitting into their Republic of Gamers series of products (just barely though), they don't really have a reason for making phones in the first place. They still made some good ones though.

After experiencing ping spikes on these phones, I'll never recommend it as gaming phones. But enjoy.

Asus hasn't provided android 10 updates for max pro series when devices are getting android 11 updates, even though it promised. Almost a year in beta version which has so many bugs that it's unusable

Well I have the rog 3 and the Zenfone 7(not pro) besides the weight these phones are amazing fast and reliable. Cases and other accessories are hard to find for zf7 and the rog specific add-ups are never in stock. I'm likely what Asus has been doing with their hardware so much about 80 percent of my electronics are from them. They just work and work for a long time unlike apple products... I don't think apple can compare to Asus until apple can make a consumer product that can last or at least can get upgraded or fixed.

Sorry to say this, but I'm going to put the Zenfone 7 in the Loser category. I really cannot see the logic for the vanilla variant to exist when you can have the Pro variant for only €100 more and yet utilizes a much more powerful Snapdragon 865+ chipset and has OIS for both the main and telephoto camera. If ASUS goes for the premium midrange chipset like the Snapdragon 765G and drops the RRP a little lower to €599 or €549, then it would be a real winner.
