Given that it has been an year since the Pro X launched, a lot of apps have been ported and updated to ARM including Adobe Photoshop. More apps are running better than it was back then and definitely not slow. Putting the Surface Pro X in context, in Geekbench 5 the single core score is similar to i5 7200U while multicore score is similar to i5 8250U which should be the same story when using ARM coded browsers. That also depends what browser you use, there's a slight difference between Chrome, Firefox and Edge. Certainly not an Ivy Bridge i5 that's on par with Gemini Lake. Native apps can run almost as well as Surface Pro 7 as ARM apps consume less resources than x86. As for emulation, it has improved with support for 64 bit rather than the previous 32 bit which what brought the Pro X to its knees. This all depends on if Microsoft cares and they do, now that Apple has proven how capable the M1 chip is.

This is only Windows 10 on ARM. As for Linux, the support has been great with the existence of Raspberry Pi, Pinebooks and Chromebooks. Seeing how well it can perform on low-end hardware, HarmonyOS being build from the ground up can potentially maximise ARM's performance. Kirin 990 wouldn't be a problem at all.

Look to the new Apple PC's with the M1 cpu filled with arm tech :-) If all others switch to a common standard arm based os, the software developers will follow.

"On laptops, the performance is fine. The problem here is that it needs to emulate, which really brings down its knees."

You immediately contradicted yourself. You said the performance is fine then immediately after said that the emulation brings ARM SoCs to their knees.

But even if we were to ignore emulation, no the performance would not be fine. You'd get at most, performance equivalent to that of an ivy bridge mobile i5. And conveniently enough, my $75 laptop has an ivy bridge mobile i5. I can safely say that performance is far less than ideal even in typical web browsing.

My old Lenovo Thinkpad X220 with i5-2520M runs any Linux simply fine (Geekbench ~620/1300). So, why would anybody expect a Kirin 990 or Qc 855 with results 700-750/2600 to not run Deepin Linux similarly good or even better? They will run an ARM64 distro and all the Linux universe apps are available.
Of course, these won't be multimedia creator machines of today's standards but they will serve the daily work nicely, perhaps with incredible battery runtime.

I don't think you even read my last two sentences which I already addressed the performance on ARM laptops. Not only that but no counter against my points or maybe you refuse to acknowledge it. I guess it's fair I used the same ad hominem you used against me.

[deleted post]Then maybe make an actual point instead of loosely defining what your career field is.

The leap in performance is so big that Snapdragon 730 is on par with Snapdragon 845. When they're that powerful, age isn't a concern. I've been gaming on an Asus ROG Phone 2 and it slays through everything, achieving 120 FPS on certain games. On laptops, the performance is fine. The problem here is that it needs to emulate, which really brings down its knees. Qualcomm hasn't announced a successor to 8cx and they actually re-released it...8cx Gen2. Don't forget that this Kirin laptop is running on Linux which is far more lighter than Windows.

Ali2020, 27 Dec 2020Why anyone would consider this instead of a trusty x86 lapt... moreBecause of the recent M1 Mac. The performance per watt is so amazing, that they think ARM is the future. But apparently they forgot it took Apple years to implement this, Apple prepared the rosetta 2 emulator for intel x86 programs which have great performance, they tune their OS to match this new chip on day 1, they make sure the chip in the making can exceed intel / amd x86 chips by a huge margin before they even release the chip, the M1 chip definitely not a gen 1 product.

But like all shocking releases, everyone had to copy and push out first gen products asap, Huawei here slap on a linux distribution fast, push it out immediately. Or Microsoft, saving themselves by allowing android apps, or nivida pushing their own cpu. Well I like it when everyone is kept on their toes, better products to look forward to.

abigfanoftechs, 27 Dec 2020Power & cooling in laptop will be completely different ... moreYou remind me of the people who go "Why would I get X graphics card when I can just get Y graphics card and overclock it to get the same performance!" when they can also overclock X graphics card to get even better performance.

I know that's not what we're talking about here, just thought it was a similar concept. Because a Kirin 9000 put in a laptop would also have better cooling and power.

Anyways, that boost easily gets cancelled out by the lack of software optimization for ARM chips.

The real problem is that there are not enough 9000 chips due to the USA's ban, and they will prefer to use those in their phones, which makes sense as is much more probable that a consumer buys a phone than a laptop with linux...
