Huawei's first Kirin-powered laptop's specs leak

26 December 2020
The ARM-based Kirin 990 will be on board.

"The laptop runs Linux-based Deepin OS 20 but the transition to HarmonyOS will be made possible in the future."

Now this is interesting. Possible chance for HarmonyOS to be a Linux-based mobile OS like MeeGo and Sailfish OS?

The problem with these chips is not power, but heating. In a laptop you have a lot of space to put some cooling. This kirin chip can be overlooked easily

I really wish other manufacturers would follow the same suit. ARM chips make intel chips look really outdated inefficient expensive dinosaurs

Anonymous, 27 Dec 2020Sure I understand as a consumer, more choices are good. But... moreI think it's interesting to see Huawei trying their hands on ARM-based laptops. They have the hardware and software like Apple and given that they're attracting developers into putting their apps in Huawei AppGallery, they're capable of doing so for HarmonyOS.

Microsoft isn't pushing developers as hard as Apple which is why it's such a mess using the Surface Pro X. There will be x86-64 to ARM emulation soon which will make it usable but performance degradation is big.

joe nodden, 27 Dec 2020Assuming? Troll? More chipset alternatives? Are you mad? ... moreYou didn't read the article. Huawei make cheaper version of their Matebook 14 that's why they put Kirin 990 instead of 9000. Maybe for testing the market also.

Do u wanna buy the Matebook with Kirin 9000 with quite expensive price? If not, you are a troll. Always complaining but won't buy.

joe nodden, 27 Dec 2020Assuming? Troll? More chipset alternatives? Are you mad? ... moreMaybe what he meant was alternatives are ARM-based laptops such as Microsoft Surface Pro X (SQ1) and Macbook Air Late 2020 (M1). Kirin 990 is anything but slow, it's on par with Snapdragon 855. Any chipset that uses Cortex-A76 cores handles tasks very well.

joe nodden, 27 Dec 2020Assuming? Troll? More chipset alternatives? Are you mad? ... moreDamn, you just destroyed him haha

Strange that with a shortage of kirin chips for phones that they would put this on a laptop given that both Intel and Amd can supply them with chips for laptops.

Deepin OS is definitely under most people's radar, and the fact that it's made by Chinese developer just made it worse. However, I've tried Deepin and I say that it has the most beautiful and polished interface to date. Not even MacOS is comparable to it.

Apps can quickly updated to run natively on M1 because Apple develop both chipset and OS. Huawei only develop the chipset but use Linux which is built for various chipsets. The product won't see it's potential until Huawei can use their own OS.

The Kirin 990 is objectively slower than the Kirin 9000. There's no assumptions or anything at all to be made there. And what the heck do you mean more alternatives? Their only offering here is a slow Kirin 990, there are no alternatives whatsoever. Idk what you're on, but you better get off it.

But I believe this will never leave outside of China, except for those that import the device since it is/going to be running an OS most people never even heard of.

After seeing the M1 Macbooks, I really want the Snapdragon 8cx to be comparable, but while apps and programs for M1 chips are quickly becoming more and more native, not a lot of developers are doing the same for 8cx, which is a real shame.

The more chipset alternatives the better especially for consumers. CPU / laptop chipset will be more competitive and push themselves to the edge for better quality offerings. The good thing about having your own in-house chipset is the overall optimization of its PC / laptop performance.
