First Sony Xperia 1 III renders show a periscope camera, slimmer bezels

28 January 2021
The design is otherwise unchanged - all flat sides and 90° angles. Sony will keep the 3.5 mm jack and microSD slot that we enjoyed on the Mark II.

Frikking Gorgeous, if its that slim and retain 4000 mAh battery, it will be awesome.
(possibly) Decent battery, Oled screen, micro-sd, 3.5mm jack, stereo front firing speakers and sony camera system.

Not to mention if the placement of the shortcut key is easy to press when you hold the phone horizontally, it'll be good trigger button for fps

Anonymous, 29 Jan 2021Big sensor cameras do not have digital zoom? What does Sony... moreIt only means that every big sensor cameras will always output native sensor resolution images (unless you set it to binning mode or pixel shifting whatsoever).
Sony's Clear Image Zoom is only for small image sensors to compensate for the lack of space for optical zoom lenses.
Do you see Alpha cameras having those 100X Space Zoom feature?

Anonymous, 29 Jan 2021Your comment is immediately invalid when you say there is n... moreWhat are the cons of a side scanner anyway? Even if there are, they are still less problematic compared to the problems of in-display fps.

In-display fingerprint scanners are more expensive because they are more complicated while doing exactly the same thing as what a normal fingerprint scanner does. Period.

i now follow less reviewers - like tk and juan bagnell... gsmarena is fine with specsheet and some parts of the review... just put "grains of salt"...
besides, i am the one using "my phone"... not to brag it or flaunt it (meh, they say it is ugly) but "use it"

Anonymous, 29 Jan 2021Professionals seldom use HDR? Landscape photographers use i... moreBruh, where the heck do you see professional photographers using HDR? All I see is that "true" professionals always prefer to shoot in Manual Mode with RAW outputs, which is where Xperia's Photo Pro app is intended for.
They don't use HDR, then edit the RAW photos by themselves to improve the dynamic range in a better way than HDR or computational photography does.
See, why are there still apps for iPhones that allow shooting in RAW if Apple's HDR is already good enough? Turns out that not everyone likes HDR, be it from Apple, Samsung, Google, Huawei or whatever, and manually editing photos is still superior to AI enhanced images.

Remember that the best images taken today were always shot in RAW and edited afterwards.

Aldwin123, 29 Jan 2021Again you have to consider the PRICE 1. Pixel Binning fo... morePixel binning only works in photos, and even then, it'll take some time to gather enough light due to the low sensitivity. Moving objects at night will be a complete mess, especially with Night Mode, while the Sony's very fast and reliable autofocus will be sure to nail the scene correctly (it's laughable on what DxOMark says about weak autofocus on the 1 II when most of the real world camera reviews about it show that it's not even the case at all).

4K consumes more power than high refresh rate because unlike the latter, resolution is always set to the maximum regardless of the resolution of the content being displayed.
High refresh rate, on the other hand, can be toggled off in times when it's not needed.
Xperia 5 II has excellent endurance despite the 120Hz panel and just 4000mAh battery. At 6", 1440p is not noticeably sharper than 1080p.

In-display fingerprint scanner does increase the price still. They spent the money there instead of giving a charger inside the box, and now the S21 and S21+ are only in 1080p.

That's because it is 5000mAh. Besides, we haven't even seen Sony's flagship offering this year, so it's very unfair to compare them head-to-head in that way.
25W on my sister's Snapdragon S20+ already makes it warm when charging, so 21W would be better at keeping temperatures lower.

Xperia 1 III can also be an all-around device, as rumors suggest that it may offer 120Hz in 1080p while only 60Hz in 4K (the absolute best of both worlds). And speaking of all rounder, the 1 III can be used as a gaming phone due to the presence of headphone jack, which is far superior to any wireless audio systems in terms of latency in audio, while the S21U won't be suited for such case.

Sony just wouldn't completely allow the screen to shine much brighter than a certain threshold for minimal degradation of pixels because they know the risks and the damages that it may cause in the end. They were one of the pioneers of this technology after all, so they do know what they are doing. Samsung is only giving warnings, while Sony is completely preventing such problems to occur. Besides, is 600 nits not bright enough? My 500 nits IPS screen is perfectly visible even in direct sunlight already, so I doubt an OLED at 600 nits will be so bad at it.
Also, 200+ million or less than 10 million, it's still a million that we're talking about, and that's actually a slap to Samsung to say that Sony is doing a better job at quality control on their displays than them despite working on the technology for a longer time than Sony. I mean, for a thousand dollar bucks, why should we get variations between each units? This is not supposed to be a lottery at all for the price, and that's what Sony is doing really greatly; even if they're just a few million units, each one of them is surely made virtually equal.

S21U is definitely better suited for you. It is a great phone, I won't deny it, but I just appreciate Sony's approach on their phones, picking quality over quantity.

I'm impressed that they achieved 6.73mm width with 6.5" 21:9 flat display. That display's width is 6.5mm, meaning side bezels are just above 1mm each !
