Nikkei: Apple is reducing iPhone 12 mini production

10 March 2021
This is not the first time Cupertino has slashed iPhone 12 mini orders in favor of the larger models.

To the end, not much people wants a small phone in 800$, will move to iphone 12 for better features, and really, it not to big.

Erin, 10 Mar 2021The only Android phone that is comparable with the regular ... morebut the phone itself is extremely expensive. even with a 765g, you can't trust comapanies nowadays, even smaller phones like the 12 mini and the regular 12 are already $750. phones from xiaomi are selling cheap but have big displays which are a big disadvantage to people who actually wanna use a phone thats smaller than 6'5 inches.

This is really unfortunate. Too many phones these days are oversized with 6.5" screens and weighing around 200g. It's hard to support a phone of such size in one hand. I hoped that when the 12 Mini was announced it would start more of a trend towards smaller phones. But with disappointing sales it doesn't look like that will happen. I'm still stuck using ZUK Z2 with Snapdragon 820 because there are no viable paths to upgrade to a similarly sized device with an IPS display.

IpsDisplay, 10 Mar 2021But this isn't a joystick... This a a smartphone ... moreApple's brand image is doing perfectly well looking at the sales of the iPhone 12 series as a whole. If anything, Android makers should follow and offer different sizes, as that's now yet another distinct advantage that Apple carries over Android companies.

Heck, you'll have a hard time even finding an Android phone the size of the regular iPhone 12. All you can find on the Android side are exactly similar looking 6.5 inch phablets with no variation apart from cost. They are shooting themselves in the foot here.

Good news this is prime example for social media folks etc

Don't let comments or a few thousand even million of people in your social space trick you into believing that your in the MAJORITY

People that said alot of people wanted smaller phones are in a bubble but reality is not so

              THE MAJORITY DO NOT SPEAK

              THE MAJORITY DO NOT COMMENT

THE MAJORITY DO NOT USE TECHNICAL JARGON

This a a smartphone with far more complex supply chain implications

They would likely try to make back a return on molds etc that likely cost alot especially when your doing a display size that's not ubiquitous in the market

Add to that their brand image expectations

                    Small phones are dead.

It would have failed anyway even if it had 2700mAh.
Do not use battery as excuse.

See, that's how it work, you DON'T make a SINGLE phone design/size/setup and ONLY produce it because it is the most "demanded" (the only available option which OBVIOUSLY result on everyone buying it, duh).
You make DIFFERENT models, you offer DIVERSITY, and you simply produce fewer of those who have less demand.
There are no need what so ever to make a product that ALWAYS broke sell records, making a good product that still is profitable is still good.

The smartphone industry is so messed up right now, why would you plan to make a "special" phone at the same volume as the main one?

EVERY other market do it right, take flight sim hardware for example, Thrustmaster perfectly knew their Hotas Warthog wouldn't sell 10 millions units, they didn't treat it as such, they rather made the proper amount, and produce more if there is still more demand, or GPU with built in waterblock, like the Aorus Waterforce, they perfectly know that they have to produce less than the other regular cards as there is obviously less potential buyers.

This logic from both the Smartphone industry and the people (as we can see on comment here) who think :
"It didn't break sale number so it is a failure and it mean no one want it and we should stop it" is the most plain stupid market reasoning I have ever witness.

i0S.-.Never.-.Again, 10 Mar 2021And they thought Android manufacturers will follow by launc... moreDo you see a lot of people use Caviar cases on there phone ? These made out of gold and cost like 10k ? Of curse these small phones will flop if they cost 800 plus euro. If they would be around 200-250 euro with decent hardware and cameras then it be a different story.

You just need to understand for what reason people use there phone and why they want it compact. You dont buy compact for for heavy tasks. You buy it for communications only and that it fits in your pocket and wont bother you when you move around

Problem is always the price and you dont actually need flagship hardware for small phones as you wont play games on them and dont do any tasks on them that requires good hardware. It be just a phone for most of the people and the screen of 5.4 is enough for web browsing and social media. These compact phones should be as the size of the 12 mini but something 10mm thick to have something 3500mAh or larger battery in it and with decent middle class hardware for under 200 euro

But i can understand why the 12 mini wont sell well if the just 12 is already compact enough and well it's price is like 2 times the 2020 SE that is compact too so it wont much make sense to pay 2 times the money for 12 mini as people dont buy these phones for gaming anyways for there little screens and little size

The SE2020 cannibalized the 12 mini

And they thought Android manufacturers will follow by launching smaller phones.
Once again proven that the market for smaller screen sized phones is marginal compared to regular size of 6.5 inches.

I have 12 mini, and I am happy. Great phone, very refeshing to have so small phone again. Only area for improvement is telephoto camera. Not sure, what is behind low selling numbers.
