The new Snapdragon 780G is a 5nm mid-range chip with flagship-grade modem

25 March 2021
It has a triple ISP and an NPU that is almost as fast as that in the 865/870. It features Kryo 670 CPU and Adreno 642 GPU.

Anonymous, 25 Mar 2021LOL, what 'big upgade' do u mean? If u mean ... moreThe dimensity 800 isn't better than the Snapdragon 750, Snapdragon 765, Snapdragon 765G, and the Snapdragon 768.

Its only better than NON-5G 700 series Snapdragons.

If you're talking about the dimensity 820, thats better.

40% on top of the Snapdragon 765 is the 2018 Snapdragon 845. Still powerful, but nowhere near the mentioned astronomical 855 - 865 (which is the space the Snapdragon 860 occupies)

It's just marketing trick; since SD800, Qualcomm NEVER put flagship-worthy Adreno on mid-range; only after 4+ years Qualcomm allow mid-range Adreno to surpass Adreno 530 (SD820/821)
This way, the market between flagship/flagship-killer & premium mid-range will not cross; customer who wants the best will get flagship SoC, customer who wants mid-range with a bit of flagship features will get SD7xx.

IpsDisplay, 25 Mar 2021So finally competition form mediatek's dimensity serie... moreOne or Two years SoC are fine, ONLY when it is flagship one.
Remember Velvet which uses SD845 & became quite success?
Qualcomm seems to pick this signal, that's why they 'refurbished' SD855+ & SD865+
With flagship SoC, no matter even if it's 3-4 years old, it could still hold the ground against current hi-mid range from upper SD7xx (SD750/765/768/780)

I STILL use G5 & v30 precisely because it holds up in anything (except the battery, slightly deteriorate, but it's normal for (almost) 4-5 years old devices)

Anonymous, 25 Mar 2021It's good to know that 780G GPU gonna be a big upgrade... moreLOL, what 'big upgade' do u mean?
If u mean 'big price hike', then I agree.
With the exclusion of mmwave, Dimensity 800/1000/1100/1200 are better overall.

What can u expect from 'half-baked' SoC, when last year's flagship SoC like SD860 & SD870 available for cheap?

Not even the 'cheap' 1st gen Nord with SD765 could sell at this time, when Xiaomi, Realme, & Iqoo are competing in releasing 'affordable' flagship killer!

Skipping fives, 875 missed, now 775 missed, huh not really, coz this chip must pack some punch over the now-lowly 860.

Kryo 670? That is a real step up from the 765G's Kryo 475 microarchitecture. Heck, even the 870, 865+, and 865 are all using Kryo 585 microarchitecture. At this point, the only reason you would buy a phone with a flagship-tier 800 Series chipset is because of serious mobile photography and videography, heavy mobile gaming, and Desktop Mode (though LG has proved that the 765G is more than capable of running Desktop Mode with the Velvet 5G).

What's the status of those updatable drivers of past chips? Are they actually being updated? Or it's just a gimmick?

Not really. Camera-focus phones still prefer to use top-tier flagship chipset because it has far more advanced ISP than its upper midrange counterpart. And btw, I wouldn't count Google in before you argue about the chipset used in the latest Pixel phones because they are still using an archaic camera sensor. It does show that software still has its limitation no matter how advanced it is.

DrakeX, 25 Mar 2021Finally! It's about time we get a proper upgrade from ... moreWe already have the proper upgrade from the Snapdragon 730 in the shape of the 765G. This 780G is merely the 765G's brand new successor.

FatShady, 25 Mar 2021oh look, another chip that will barely get used by any comp... moreWhich would you rather have, a pricey but faster chip or a cheaper but slower chip?

99% of people wouldn't notice the difference in performance from 720, 730, 732, 750, 765...I'm not saying there aren't tiny speed increases here and there but unless you run them all side by side to measure the nano second difference they all do more than respectable jobs at running most people's phones most of the time.

                                  OK in short
For CPU and GPU performance,Sd865(including Sd870)series is better.

1.The Sd780's GPU performance is a little better than Sd855,the Andero642 is a refresh and improved version of Andero640 on Sd855.

2.The improvement between A77 and A78 is slightly at same frequency, while Sd865/870 have a higher frequency big and perium core,so both single core and multi core test,Sd865/870 is better.

What is the advantage of Sd780:
1.Triple ISP/DSP,like Sd888,while Sd865/870 have only two.Triple DSP cores allow three camera work together,so when you zoom in recording(like ultra wide to main then to telephoto),it will be more smooth. And you can record/take a photo with three camera(one front and two back)together while Sd870 only allowed one front and one back together.

                                  2.Build-in mordem/BP,cost less power

3.At daily use(low pressure work and low frequency),it is.more power efficiency.

Base on those facts,Sd780 will be used on camera-focus phone now.And remember due to capacity limit of Samsung 5LPE,Sd780 is still short in supply.I think the first phone with Sd780 is Mi11Lite 5G version while they still have a Sd765G version as back-up.Redmi K40 was designed to use Sd780,but then change to Sd870 due to it get delayed.

What, 25 Mar 2021Agreed. SD888 is not a wise investment at the current price... moreWhat cons do you refer to?
