The new Snapdragon 780G is a 5nm mid-range chip with flagship-grade modem

25 March 2021
It has a triple ISP and an NPU that is almost as fast as that in the 865/870. It features Kryo 670 CPU and Adreno 642 GPU.

870 or 780 - that's the question.
Whether to have the most powerful chip of the second grade 7xx series, or to take the second most powerful SoC of the first grade 8xx series. Higher clock speed vs. better architecture. Battery endurance vs. raw performance. Second in Rome or first in town... I want to be compared.

What, 25 Mar 2021Agreed. SD888 is not a wise investment at the current price... moreIt's available in real devices you can actually buy.

That's a huge plus compared to anything based on failing TSMC processes.

Other than that, processors made on the 5nm process is also superior to anything last-gen.

SpiritWolf, 25 Mar 2021Sounds promising. Efficiency and price are are questions now.If it's based on the same architecture as the 888, it may not be that good for being an upper mid range chip. I'm staying far away from 888 and any of its incremental upgrades/bins.

If the Google Pixel 5a is using this I'd pre-order today. Of course it'll use something like a 690 or 765 if we're lucky.

Lookin good. Finally some good food for the midrange.

Shellyman Infinity, 25 Mar 2021I hope the Pixel 5a picks this up.Unfortunately, I think the Pixel 6 is getting this one. Not a bad thing but Google will never price it well...

So finally competition form mediatek's dimensity series forced Qualcomm to stop with their incremental 7 series "upgrades"

                        765 to 768 was a joke

Now they finally have an answer to the dimensity 820

But sadly it seems midrangers are now going the direction of high refresh rate AMOLED displays and high resolution camera with 1 or two year old (almost) processors

                        732/720 yuck!

I hope the Pixel 5a picks this up.

oh look, another chip that will barely get used by any company cause its pricey.

It's good to know that 780G GPU gonna be a big upgrade over the 765

This is the one previously called 775

Finally! It's about time we get a proper upgrade from the Snapdragon 730 and a competitor of Exynos 1080 and Mediatek D1100/1200. It'll be interesting to see how it will slot in Xiaomi's lineup with the existence of the Snapdragon 870 device which offers best bang for buck.

Missing mmWave? That's Qualcomm's signature. Guess that means that will be a separate piece if manufacturers like Samsung or TCL want to use it.

Sounds promising. Efficiency and price are are questions now.
