Anonymous, 30 Mar 20214 number is considered unlucky in China.Redmi 4 was one of the best selling phones in Xiaomi's history. Pretty sure Xiaomi doesn't care about 4. I'd say they're more into #13.

AnonD-762416, 30 Mar 2021Because it's frigging complicated to make a functional... moreYou are mixing things up.

You don't need glass to bond it to have an outward folding display, you only need a printable plastic display. Don't confuse straight talk, it doesn't do much. If you don't know, listen and learn rather than spewing nonsense about others.

I don't have pictures of good examples of devices, but have a look at this page with a bag which is a flexible phone. I've been looking at electrowetting technology for massive touch surface table designs, TV and projectors, as it allows some pretty sophisticated things to be done with it compared to this example. It was once going to replace LCD instead of , but those designs were not sophisticated enough.

                    https://www.core77.com/posts/7200/Electrowetting-For-Paper-That-Isnt-Paper

The reason why the limited example you are thinking of is difficult, is it was an unwise way to do it. Giving the life of a phone, the limited versatility of folding out to a bigger size, it suited a cheaper technology which could last for 2- 5 years on an outward fold with no real sign of wear. People paying big money for something odd marketing wise, that is going disappoint, is bad for business.

I really don't see the big hoopla about the liquid lens or whatever, closer macro distances have been achieved with traditional cameras.

if u look at the live images from in hand reviews the bezels are massive and ugly front screen looks like dirt too. 90hz on front screen and only 60hz on main screen. don't be conned by low price and horrible marketing

Anonymous, 30 Mar 2021it only work up to 60C. Not boiling temperatureYes, I know that. I read the whole article before commenting.
The near boiling temperature that I'm talking about is from the environment, which may cause the space inside the liquid lens to heat up to extremely high degrees.
Just imagine using the device in a very hot environment. The heat from the outside and the heat produced by the SoC inside can combine to reach higher temperature that's beyond what this liquid lens can handle. I am totally curious about how Xiaomi dealt with it to prevent it from evaporating.

Amazing...foldable screen, 37 mn full charge, quad speakers, liquid lens...for the price of the Samsung S21 ultra which has nothing special. Xiaomi is the new Huawei and Samsung must be very worried...So good that the USA will probably ban them from Google. But now they have Harmony and can make their own chips...bad news for Samsung and Apple, but competition is always best for customers

The price of plastic bendable display should be worth little. I know they had bendable display tech years ago, and I gave up trying to design an alternative. But for some crank reason, they decided to go back to do research for many years to do an inward fold. This is one of the worse things to do, as fatigue is pretty inevitable, though I ilcsn see the answer instantly, healable display technologies. I did hinge design many years back, but the real solution was to have the fold on the outside, reducing the fatigue stress a great deal. Instead, we are paying for people to make money, and pay for research on inward folding technology. The other issue is the squarish and elongated form factors unfolded and folded, are ugly. The tablet mode I was designing folds up into very compact phone mode with three folds from a 16:9 tablet. A 7 inch folds to a very small phone, by today's standards. Today mobile sizes can unflod into over a 10 inch tablet. Now, I believe these are in the books of the manufacturers, but how come they are not producing cheap models with these. The present designs light seem like odd high priced units fur marketing, but should be abandoned to support the market penetration. Most phones could be foldable, as it gives you a tablet mode for $50 more, that would get people paying, as people use a phone instead of a tablet, but it is more desirable to have a tablet mode to use.
