In memoriam: LG's great smartphone inventions

05 April 2021
The company is leaving the phone business - a business to which it had contributed so much. Here's a look back at all the innovations by LG.

As a company that absolutely sucks at software, LG should have stuck to phones where they just have to attach AOSP to firmware drivers. Their home automation and IoT software is such a broken mess that I don't even know what they're trying to do. The LG ThinQ app claims it does home and lifestyle automation while not even having basic remote control working.

AnonD-124847, 06 Apr 2021Why??Because... it's less options. LG's phones at least had a different identity than all the copycats out there not named Apple and Sony.

All I can say is that their ideas were great, but they never doubled down on them. You knew that the gimmick you're getting is just there for hype and the spec sheet - they were adding these so they can sell the phone. They cared about being "first" to things so people could talk about them and move to the next "first" completely forgetting about their previous idea's existence. If there was a feature you liked about an LG phone, you knew they will give up on it a year later in favor of new gimmicks, and they will not be further developing or even supporting them. They barely supported any phones that weren't the most current flagships altogether.

I appreciate LG for the amazing Nexus phones they made and for ahead of its time devices like the G2, or ideas like the Flex, quad-DACs, self-healing plastics and design innovations. They will all have a great place in the Smartphone history. But to me LG went down because ultimately they built a reputation of entirely abandoning these as soon as they weren't the newest cool thing anymore. It ultimately made me feel that what they're communicating is "you bought this gimmick and it's not working as well as it should? Thanks for the cash but tough s**t sucker, now off to the next phone" attitude.

I don't understand how hypocritical people can be

They say with their words how sad it is LG is out but then these same people openly state their latest phone IS not an LG... They literally chose to not support

And then people really believe in their hearts as a smartphone brand that many people will miss them .. that's some serious dishonesty the minority will miss them not the majority

These same people that write speeches of their sadness have an apple, samsung xiaomi etc in their pockets OR typing on this article with It right now lol they wouldn't even buy an LG for their elderly family

Mmmm, 05 Apr 2021Based on your bias and not really even open opinion , i gue... moreAlright buddy easy with the ad hominems

Don't target my personal age etc just stick to the points being discussed at hand

I can say objectively the mass audience couldn't care less for the combined package of quad dacs, ultra wide cameras, 1440p panels ( vivo ushered in by the way) all under the LG brand

Are people mentioning John Good enough and his contribution to lithium ion batteries everytime they're about to buy a smartphone?? No because that is irrelevant to an actual purchase

But if you want a good grade in history class then write an essay on the respect that LG deserves , again this is all about an economical fall of a particular division , not brand appreciation day.

LGs devices were to expensive for many years and often fell flat in some regard. I always wanted one for the Quad-DAC but other devices were simply better when I ignored that feature while often costing less.

To much mediocrity for to many years. Outside of their Quad-DAC they had nothing going for them, their designs were outdated for way to long, the hardware was fine but nothing special, the support bad, the marketing non-existant. Even the Velvet wasn't that great, to expensive for a device that was that average. The Wing was interesting but just a waste of money to be fair, should've spent that money on improving their existing phones instead.

r33fd, 05 Apr 2021In their early days LG were neck and neck with Samsung, but... moreLol, my words :D

Last article bit is quite clear. First LG never put themsefs down as many Chinese start ups, once sales went down LG simply needed to produce many good phones for half the price just simoly capilatlize the market and slowly rebuild the brand but what LG did is was keep going and pretending that it was premium brand and acting like it was Samsung. When Samsung had few rough years back in mid last decade what they did, they just started new lines ups for cheap prices like A series M series and so on to keep momentum going, though Samsung is market leader so it was easier to do that but LG is was all aboit pride trying to keep up with Samsung pretending it is big brand never letting it down in pricing, people just started to ignore LG. But if they were aggressive with pricing and going up Chinese brand route, they would be still main players in the business. Ego is the worst enemy of suck companies like LG and Sony. Not admitting that things not working and brands fading and not going into "reset" mode. Producing good but cheap phones. Thats the only way to go in such insane smartphone market and proof is Chinese brands like Realme, OnePlus and Xiaomi (as they started)

In their early days LG were neck and neck with Samsung, but after the Galaxy S4, nothing LG produced was even close.

They would lose mostly in display and camera, which are arguably the most important features in a smartphone.

But they still insisted on premium launch prices, which drove people away.

Then instead of improving the core features or lower the price they went for gimmicks which didn't stick.

So they their brand lost more and more value until nobody was willing to pay premium for LG anymore.
