In memoriam: LG's great smartphone inventions

05 April 2021
The company is leaving the phone business - a business to which it had contributed so much. Here's a look back at all the innovations by LG.

LG was way ahead in terms of invention, but it's marketing strategies were very wrong. The phones were very less marketed, and to top that they were way too expensive. This made it difficult to appeal to high end phone user's, who were stuck on Apple or Samsung. Also, it didn't had any products to appeal to mid range or low range phone buyers, which is much more larger market than high end phone market.
Irrespective of that, LG was very inventive company, perhaps better than Post-Steve Jobs Apple in terms of invention. It's shame that they had to exit like this.

I was a fan of LG until the bootloop issue killed my V10 prematurely. That was truly a shame since I loved that phone.

There's another thing people forgot/not mentioned here:
The 2016 LG G5 was IP66 water-resistant AND had a User Removable Battery.

Whilst the LG V20 might survive a quick dunk in the toilet, and the same went for the weak ingress on the Samsung S5 (albeit IP67 rated). The G5 had a secret protection, that allowed it to be saved by rain and accidental drops... which is what most people want waterproofing for. YET it also had a User Removable Battery, meaning you can keep the phone alive for much longer years, it is cheaper to maintain, and it actually has a longer battery life than other phones (hot-swapping gets you to 100% charge in seconds, rather than hours).

ishreal, 05 Apr 2021Best joke I've heard all morning 😂And where's the lie? You may like or not Samsung, but it's the most sold brand, and more important, Samsung flagships and their vision of android always come with something no one else have, and then you see those features implemented on new android versions.

Brave and understandable decision made by LG especially during this hard time ...

I hope one day LG will come back to the mobile market ..

If their phone division's customer service was anything like their appliances and consumer electronics customer service, its no surprise at all.

                            rip lg. love your devices

The V50 with its DualScreen case formed my first love with LG. It really is hard to believe that there is a smartphone with studio-grade sound quality. I actually like the Quad DAC so much that I had stopped embracing wireless audio altogether and now gone wired. As for that DualScreen case, well that is single-handedly the most useful accessory I have ever used on a smartphone, period. Two simultaneous apps in full screen? Easy. PSP and DS/3DS emulator while watching YouTube or Netflix? No problem. Two pages PDF reading? Love it. Frankly, I'm just going to keep my V50 while searching for the Wing 5G and also the V60 with its DualScreen case before they become a hot property in tech enthusiasts' collector's item.

Well ,LG has always been a brand to reckon with. They always tried successfully new trends including Quad DAC , wireless charging, etc . They actually tried to make use of their ideas like modular, flexible phone segments but they instead made and let it forgotten. They made phones in the premium segment only within a couple of weeks to let it fall to affordable to mid budget category. They should have understood that their phone will be a sensation and to modify the ideas.(Wished other companies adopted the Quad DAC too).I plan to get a g8x ThinQ still now as the spec offering was good. Also the tech reviewers like MKBHD and Arun(Mrwhosetheboss) tried to motivate people about the brand.
Finally I wish they develop great display TVs by LG and one day return to the ever developing Smartphone Industry .

... oh and the biggest reason I forgot to mention is unlike the V50 the V40 can still be found on Android 9. Android 10 kills native DSD which is 99% of my music collection!

                                    LG Phones I've Owned -
                                    May 2015: G3 Beat
                                    February & October 2017: G5
                                    May 2017: V20
                                    August 2019: Nexus 4
                                    January 2021: Nexus 5

I guess I wouldn't really claim the Nexus 4 and 5 as LG devices. They had wireless charging when the G2 through G5 didn't have it. So that was Google's idea. It's so convenient to just charge my Nexus 5 on top of my power bank without the use of a plug. Palm Pre was so ahead of the game.

My favorite LG phone is G5, V20, and G3 Beat in that order. The G3 Beat AKA Vigor was a good phone. The standby was amazing on it. But the software had lag and Snapdragon 400 with only 1 GB RAM made it way too slow.

I've considered getting a G3 and G4 since both had removable battery. But I would read comments about them and just get turned off by them. The V10 and V20 are just too large for me. The V30 is sleek and LG's best-looking phone of the 2010s but a glass back and sealed battery.

I'm content where I'm at with phones. At least with LG gone, more people can appreciate what they did. You start missing someone or something until they're truly gone.

LG in Australia were woeful at updates... I had a G6 and while the phone was great, it got zero security patches and only 1 version update... Almost a year after the android version was released.
Simply for that reason I swore I'd never get another LG no matter how good the hardware.
