In memoriam: LG's great smartphone inventions

05 April 2021
The company is leaving the phone business - a business to which it had contributed so much. Here's a look back at all the innovations by LG.

hmm, 05 Apr 2021Weird to see all these wireless charging on like 7 plus old... morePrice.
Cheaper phones = lower profit margin

I loved my good old LG Optimus G Pro back then, very fluid, smooth and no glitches whatsoever. Though charging was very slow, but a very good phone. Used it over 3 years

Weird to see all these wireless charging on like 7 plus old devices and even still now we have them only on flagship phones. While it should be as standard as sim card slot for phones for today. Even these slow 2.5-5W wireless charging be ok for budget phones as it be a option to have when something happens to usb port. Like my Nexus 7 2013 that still working for me and only way to charge it is trough wireless charging.

This is unfortunate....but it is what it is
I was not a fan of their phones but their innovation were out of this world.....they still kept the headphone jack, FM Radio and microSD card slot on their flagships when everyone else was ditching them....I give them props for that
However, their battery life and UI were not good in my opinion. I'll give that to Sony but that's another story

An0n, 05 Apr 2021They're already lost their value long ago. No one will... moreHave you not read the article or the comments? A lot of people will miss them.

Hoping the Xperia 1 Mark iii will fill the hole, name another flagship with MicroSD card slot, Quad DAC (headphone jack in general at this point), stereo speakers, MIL-STD-G, IP68, big battery, all while retaining some good cameras this year or last year.

Let me save you the trouble, you can't, oh wait, the LG V60 nearly ticked all of those boxes (missing the high refresh rate screen). The last thing the US mobile market needed was LESS competition and that's what we got now.

LG G8s, great value and I have dropped it more times than I can count, still going strong despite me not using a case. Hopefully they'll at least continue to provide updates (which are extremely slow, and that has been my only problem with LG). Will miss their selection.

IpsDisplay, 05 Apr 2021Honestly this isn't bad news , LG as far as smartphone... moreBased on your bias and not really even open opinion , i guess you are too young to even think to realize that whatever "new generation" phone you are using right now already had a way paved by LG and earlier brands. If you don't know how to respect
the history of smartphones and how far they have come through then there is no point on why you should even care when you think their innovation was useless. I guess you don't like ultrawide cameras, 1440p displays, manual cameras and Quad DACs then

Pixel and a G6 and a couple bass LG phones and they all have perform well the only problem I didn’t like was there upgrade for software was kind of slow

The LG phones I had: LG G2, LG G5 and LG G7. The G2 had this problem of the touch screen, once fixed a great phone. The G5 it was a good phone specially for the wide angle camera and modularity but a poor battery life. The G7 was the best, cheap and great hardware specs and better construction quality than past LG G series, only downside was the lack of updates. It's too sad to see LG phones no more :(

                    Lg gw300 qwerty keypad good

Honestly this isn't bad news , LG as far as smartphones goes especially in recent years

Are not competitive, their phones have zero mass appeal

I remember when the fall started right after the LG G5 they experimented and then spiralled down to the gutters

Players like huawei actually have serious competitive contribution to the smartphone industry and sadly they have been politically blocked

Honestly good riddance, maybe older nostalgic folks will reminisce but younger demographics have not even touched an LG smartphone but at the very least they've used an LG to microwave their pizza

The most popular LG G device is surprisingly the G2. And like its predecessor, the Optimus G, and the G6 and up, G2 didn't have a removable battery. Only the G3, G4, G5, and first two V phones did.

The G2 was a great device though. Put the volume buttons on the back like the G3 and G4 did. I didn't care for no removable battery, no microSD slot, and the G2'a glossy, plastic feel that Samsung got crucified for. Surprised it was so popular since lacking those features didn't age well for it.

Its very sad company like LG moving out of mobile business. LG failed because they did not advertise itself or did not try PR campaigns like Apple did with their products. But samsung quickly learned apple way of business. VIVO is another brand who followed apple business model. And also LG was not able give value for money products like Chinese companies did. And another major issue was software support.
But who knows LG may come back woth more innovative products.

The LG V20 goes for $130 on eBay. They say new but I doubt it. Most likely refurbished.

They have extended battery cases from 8K to 10K mAh. That's like storing 2 to 3 OEM 3.2K mAh stacked batteries. You want a phone that can last forever? Get a V20. If you mind the size, then G5 but it's battery is considerably worse since it doesn't have extended batteries that big.

Kingslayer, 05 Apr 2021With LG Mobile Division now officially dead, does that mean... morethinking about it too...
at first, the v60... but if they provide android 11 update of my v50s, then it is redundant as a collection...
at least for the third and last time i would be buying another lg phone...

Kingslayer, 05 Apr 2021With LG Mobile Division now officially dead, does that mean... moreNo , they are not gonna cut prices to sell remaining units.
                                  At least not now.
Expect same price for few more months.

Kingslayer, 05 Apr 2021At least LG left the industry on their terms. It wasn'... moreDidn't Palm made a very tiny android phone just few years ago?
                                    Something smaller than galaxy pocket.

With LG Mobile Division now officially dead, does that mean fire sale on their phones? I wouldn't mind getting a Wing for dirt cheap but I know it received such poor reviews..

The one LG phone I wouldn't mind getting is the V30. The V20 had the removable battery and metal back which I prefer, but the V30 is sleeker and is actually a design size. The V30 is 151.7 x 75.4 x 7.3 mm vs the V20 at 159.7 x 78.1 x 7.6 mm. The V30 was also 16g lighter (158g vs 174g). That was a sleek phone back in 2017. The last good one.

I could get a V30 for pretty cheap on OfferUp or eBay. The problem is the sealed battery. I would have to go to UbreakiFix to get it replaced and could be costly just to get the battery. HTC One M8 costs $129.99 just for a battery replacement at UbreakiFix. What's the point of getting LG phones anyway? No more support. All the battery replacements could be liquidated..

If you plan to get an old LG phone, get one with removable battery. This is why G5 remains my favorite over my Pixel 3 and iPhones. I have this peace of mind that I can always buy batteries off eBay. They still sell Nexus One batteries on eBay and that came out 11 years ago. Just stockpile batteries. They'll be good stored for 10 years.

The most innovative and creative phones ever created by this company. I'd wished they could have made their products more available globally. will definitely miss LG phones. stuck with all chinese brands and apple forever now :(
