An0n, 14 Apr 2021I really love reading blind optimism of how people believe ... moreI love competition and growth. It is good that Harmony has advanced this far and that it comes with a new experience, something different from IOS and Android. Bill gates, Jeff Bezos, Jack Ma, Thomas Edison were all optimist.

Anonymous, 14 Apr 2021so what? almost every single major company spies on you.... moreHuawei might just be the biggest spy among all Chinese phone brands because it is china's number 1 phone brand and has the widest reach. CCP would definitely utilize that.

I don’t know how this Harmony OS will be like or how many people will get on board, but I can tell you is quite a challenge to use your smartphone without any Google app or account (not even YouTube). I am doing that 1 month already and is not easy. But I have ambition to pull this through, just because I don’t want to have anything to do with Google ever again.
Not all people are like me though. I know iPhone users who use lots of google apps on their phones.
What I am trying to say is, it doesn’t matter if Huawei will give alternatives apps for each Google app. If it’s not simple or intuitive enough to use them, people will just stay away.
Not to mention if they will want to go worldwide with this or stay just in China and some parts of Asia. In this way people interested will need to import them to their countries, which again not many people will be eager to do.

An0n, 14 Apr 2021I really love reading blind optimism of how people believe ... moreI really don't think it would be difficult for Huawei to implement the same features that are in GMS into HMS so developers can easily port their apps over to HarmonyOS. Eventually though, I would think Huawei would move away from Android with their own proper microkernel based OS.

I really love reading blind optimism of how people believe Harmony OS will bring competition to Android or iOS, with numerous opinions. Well, everyone is entitled to his/her opinions. Just remember, the reason almost non Apple smartphones use Android because it's open source. Does Huawei will do the same for harmony OS? I don't think so. How embarrassing when they open source the code and people finds it 99% exactly like Android, but every single Android string is replaced by Harmony OS. OS pricing? You've got to be kidding me. Did I mention Android is open source? That's right, nobody wants to pay any cents for an os, that is why windows mobile failed. Good thing too because not only free, you are free to contribute to its development. Many pull request doesn't come from Google, but also Qualcomm, and others. Huawei? I don't think so. How about relying only to Huawei sounds like for os update? Sounds good to you? Nope, it never will be. Unless you think it's a good idea to rely on Huawei, how has track record of slow, even rarely, update their own devices even before US sanction. How about apps developer? Lucky for them it still Android at the core. Minor modifications might be necessary, but hopefully not to painful. Unless your apps rely on Google services, which now you have to create another one that rely on Huawei's. Try to keep those in mind.

HarmonyOS was born due to an emergency situation. Not Google, not buyers. Xiaomi has taken advantage and is the best option.

I think it's quite possible that this succeeds in China.
Then you'll have a China-Russia-EU-RoW segmentation.

If they do this in right pricing, people will shift to them. Microsoft phones were expensive, main reason why people didn't buy. At a right price with advanced tech, the android will be crashed.

Would like to see this happen and Huawei to build their fabs and manufacture their chips free of US technology. The US don't know how to compete and is resorting to asinine technology bans and sanctions based on spurious allegations of backdoors and spying which they are infamous for. It's time to fight against that bs or the US will hold the world back from technological progress.

[deleted post]so what?
almost every single major company spies on you.
just because huawei is being independent now doesn't mean they don't spy.
you all always defend chinese brands, but literally they are the same as american brands, spying on their users.
they have the same way of marketing, stop defending huawei.

Less Google is always a good thing, though I wish Huawei devices could be bootloader unlocked since the hardware is really good.
