Alex, 27 Apr 2021I am cautiously hopefull Nokia will release a high end phon... moreIt's not only about hardware, HMD already had decent hardware in the first gen of Nokia phones. It's the software that's trash and they don't seem to improve.

hmm, 27 Apr 2021People didnt kill popup cam as the phone brands didnt make ... moreThe pop up clearly had and still have a lot of success, the phones that have a pp up are among the most popular and considered among the best despite similar specs phones being not.
On Kimovil we can see the Poco F2 Pro is still on the top 10 of user satisfaction, the Mi 9T Pro is still loved, the OnePlus 7(t) Pro despite the cost is still considered a legendary phone.
While it was clear it would not become the mainstream design, it was ready to become more and more popular.
But all the fearmongers, starting with articles writers that kept referring to it as a weird wonky thing that is fragile and all that, and all the idiots that repeated it without even thinking by themselves scared people away from that.

And well, this is still because of the same people that there is no other choices.
OI am sure if people were not as stupid and didn't badmouth anything beside the mainstream things, the smartphone industry would be much different.
But what the point of trying to find out what users want when you can't differentiate between legit concerns and people who are just haters for the sake of it because of how many there are?
The funny part is that, when you read the answers I get, I am the hater for pointing out that "yet another phone that doesn't offer us a new option/is the same as all the other", but themselves who spit on other alternatives aren't.
The smartphone community is highly cancerous, and its industry has the biggest ratio of potential diversity to lack of it of ANY industry worldwide.

Acorns, 27 Apr 2021I think phone companies have caused much of the outrage abo... morei agree completely

AnonD-909757, 27 Apr 2021*No modern smartphone are waterproof. *The pop up is water... morePeople didnt kill popup cam as the phone brands didnt make them much. It's not like how all phones have 6.4-6.7 inch screens with either notch, teardrop or punch hole that is on everything so you have no choice. Pop up cam was only on few phones and that was it and by the brands that pop out new phones every month.

Cause there is no choice in the market then all brands think that everyone want a tablet size phones with punch hole or teardrop selfies and then have the popup on phones that are not desirable or just lack on features that other phones have that dont have the pop ups

Anonymous, 27 Apr 2021Hahaha it will cost 1000€ atleast for these midrange specs,... moreAre you referring to me, or the other guy. It's simple. The video encoder section of the chip is not priority, likely small, and that's why it does worse than an optimised intra codec would in software on the GPU and cpu's (pl see more, maybe 10 watt and a bit phone doing that). It should be doing 10 to maybe a hundred times better per unit of transistor count etc. Solution, sacrifice a little of the rest of the cpu's/GPU/s for bigger encoder, dropping performance back to midrange, but video performance going up 2-3x. But, it's not that simple. Yes, the redesign is simple, but the cutting edge chip manufacturing process the flagship is designed up is demanding huge prices per chip from the increasingly monopolistic manufacturing sector. So, doing this to a mod range design, on maybe a bigger die, and you add the better sections to a mod range chipset but keep a cheap price. The rest of the chipset doesn't matter so much for pure video camera performance. However, who wants that (chipset manufacturers). So, instead, get existing cell libraries, all worked out, and driver's for those libraries, make a slim little cheap intra codec chip for compression, or maybe not do slim cheap h264/h265/h266, and slap it in the existing reference design. Now, for a simpler pro intra codec, you are talking heaps of them per die. Could you do all the flagship phones with a die big enough, I can't work the maths out at this point. But, dead cheap. In manufacturing the phone, you are talking hopefully, $20 in lower volumes down to dollars (or under a dollar) in high volumes to accommodate it. I was thinking of providing this myself to a manufacturer. It's all a numbers game. On your own it's going be 10x more expensive for high use situation than industry wife, but maybe still cheaper than using a 888, maybe a lot cheaper. The thing you can do, is make the die segmented networked units. You just gut off as many units as you need for a phone, and fuse the cut connections you don't need and elrctronically isolate them as well. Now, the chip acts let a self contained chip, with virtually no power loss or interference from the cut fused and then isolated lines. So, for the bottom end phones you might use one unit. For a mid range you might use 4 units operating in parallel, for the flagship video, you might use 16 unit cut off the die. You can use various cuts inbetween. But the advantage opportunity s you use one simpler repetitive design repeated in one wafer, or to the dude of a eager with other designs, drastically lowering costs. The big issue, is designing such a variable parallel multi cut scheme, as to how it works. Once done, everything else is simple, cheap, relatively easy, and the same mode of design can be reused and refined. But, in the meantime, you can just starts with whatever design is out there and pay cents per chip to use it, before you design the better version. Doesn't need to cost $1000 euro, of a company wanted to get ahead. Simple! Not for you or me, but for the people who do it.

I'm trying to figure out something cheaper again fur my own ideas. Foundry stuff is freakishly expensive, and the manufacturing itself very complex, so that most equipment manufacturers are at the mercy of foundries, including ARM and AMD. Even Intel are talking about giving it up I think. It depends on central foundry companies making enough chips to pay furt the equipment and reduce the price. Commodore were one can do the few consumer computer companies to have their own foundry years back, and it massively failed on them, because they could only do so much, to get chips do fast, and took them considerable effort trying to do a 16 bit version of the 6502 processor (The Arm is actually done by one of the designers of the 6502, as a better 32 but alternative). But, if only they had converted over to a reverse polish notation stack minimal computing model, they could have done much more with what they had, and stay competitive to the Intel's. And this model is still the Asus on how you would design such a camera chip here without going into full custom silicon. It can be made to run a fraction of the power requirements of an normal CPU without full customisations.

m prive, 27 Apr 2021pop-up camera is great idea, but what's about waterproof??*No modern smartphone are waterproof.
*The pop up is water-resistant enough, the Poco F2 Pro is IP53 rated and the LG Wing is IP54 rated.
*Because of how people think IP rating = waterproof when it is not, and those with pop up know to be careful, more IP 67/68 rated phone died.
*The pop up can be made totally waterproof, it could have evolved that way if people didn't kill it by being fearmongers talking about issues it doesn't have as it if was a common thing, scaring people away from it.
*I don't care about water-resistance, I know to NOT put my phone in water, many would trade IP rating for a pop up camera.
