Roku removes YouTube TV from its app catalog amidst contract disagreements

1 May 2021
Roku claimed earlier this week that Google’s requirements were anticompetitive and now Google is pointing fingers back.

salarx, 01 May 2021VVC will never make it out to web, you know why? Cuz of its... moreX264 and x265 are everywhere in web they both have royalties,

If codecs reduce bandwidth means it's cheaper for companies to operate in web hence it worth to pay royalties.

This saga is equal to when Google ban Microsoft to access YouTube because their app was not made by Html5. So what if roku sell old hardware for cheap? What's wrong if you buy old hardware for $25?

Google has been a company that claimed "Do no evil" turned into the evil years ago with their constant privacy violating practices.
Good for Roku, as they try to protect the consumer.

kek, 01 May 2021Roku works good enough with the hardware they use. They are... moreRoku will have to give hardware support for newer and better codecs anyway, be it AV1 or some other. Right now it's doing this stunt just for attention, a mere PR stunt. It's Google for now, next Netflix will start encoding to AV1, Vimeo, and many others. How long is Roku going to ignore advancements in video codecs?

salarx, 01 May 2021VVC will never make it out to web, you know why? Cuz of its... moreRoku works good enough with the hardware they use. They are also cheap, and unlike other companies (Apple), they dont overcharge you for "Experiences". They just tell you what they offer and fullfill their words.

Also, knowing Google, I cant blame Roku on this case.

Anonymous, 01 May 2021Who cares, most of us use Apple tv or xiaomi S 4K tv lolROKU is the biggest selling TV addon seller in the World. Plum

Time to opt for Apple TV!!

As per Google, “We have never, as they have alleged, made any requests to access user data or interfere with search results. This claim is baseless and false.”

Now this is quite the truth, or is it? Why would Google need to request user data, it owns every little bit of customer's data, these streamers have google id logins, right?

Hemedans, 01 May 2021Google and his partner Own Av1, why force people to use it?... moreVVC will never make it out to web, you know why? Cuz of its royalties. AV1 is free and not bound by any royalties. And no one is asking anyone to drop support for anything. What Roku is doing is obstructing the inclusion of a newer codec. It's the loss of the user if every manufacturer comes with an xyz codec and stands against an open standard. And AV1 is not Google's sole property; Netflix, Mozilla, and many more are part of the alliance. It's supported by Firefox, Google Chrome and any browser out there based on Chromium.

The only reason Roku is whiny about it because it wants to sell inferior hardware to its customers, which is cheaper to them, like a technological conservative. And nobody gives two cents about Roku, if they drop support for youtube, nobody is gonna buy their device. Event Roku knows it, it just want attention.

Now we have vvc (x266) and it looks like it's Going to be better than Av1, so by your logic should Google Abandon Av1?

The media wants to paint this as a war between giants but there are so many short-lived streaming services and short-lived streaming devices that exactly nobody is going to care. YouTube TV has about the same number of subscribers as Crunchyroll.

Any company now can just conveniently use data collection and manipulation against Google in their argument. Not like it's not known that they do data collection and Google need to make money as well and Roku is riding on the popularity of the YouTube app to sell their shit.

Not a big deal because customers can still access YouTube via browser and won't have to deal with all the crappy ads and data collection.

Who would be dumb enough to pay into YTTV that cost the same as the cord?

For the first time I guess Roku is being unreasonable here. AV1 is such a great milestone in the history of video codecs, but Roku doesn't want to support it, cuz older hardware is cheaper. This is unacceptable from any tech company.
