Anonymous, 10 May 2021Yeah but LG just went out of business. So quad dacs with 3.... moreWhy does everyone assume that for a SINGLE feature out of the dozens that make up a phone, if the phone fail, it mean that X or Y features isn't attractive?
There are tons of considerations, price, size, power, storage size, design, color, camera, display type/resolution/refresh rate/size/brightness, battery, charging speed, software and support, brand preferences, country availability, carrier lock, Data bands, for casual the store availability as they'll take that over internet orders.
Brand marketing and even naming affect sells.
On the opposite side, a well selling phone doesn't mean all it's features are what people are looking for, they might not care or don't like it but make a compromise as they may like other features.

wongwatt, 10 May 2021I don't get gaming phones but would you actually need ... moreCustom mapping of controls would help in many types of games, and streaming. But, to play normal games is a point. A glass half full between two worlds. It helps normal games, but really needs games built for physical controls. I'm also talking about directional control pads. But, there you go, the designs are not as good as they could be. Like in my other comment, Android needs to incorporate the software streamlining, priority configuration, sandboxing and control mapping of gaming phones as normal, and Nintendo could then do it's own phone with a manufacturer, and make the older titles available for other phones.

Anybody notice the number of comment pages here are shrinking?

The regular Jack isn't top notch, but it should be mandatory except if there are legit reasons to not include it (so far, almost no phone had such legit reasons).

Anonymous, 10 May 2021I can picture him mashing those shoulder buttons in Candy C... more😂

Gaming phones cannot even run Crysis, Resident Evil Village, COD Cold War etc. so pointless. Not even the shoulder buttons would come to use. Cloud streaming don’t need gaming phones only a strong internet connection 😛

I'd expect a gaming phone to have top-notch features related to gaming. Like, 3.5mm jack (for zero latency sound). Physical controls are desired, same as high polling rate for touchscreen (although it, most likely, won't beat dedicated gamepad or controller). Same as large, flat screen with 16:9 ratio (any bigger and you have to drive more pixels with questionable benefit, meaning less performance / more heat for what? sideways view you don't really need?). High refresh rate is a must for me personally, same as decent cooling (weak spot of modern phones, IMO). Trying to get that all into a $300-400 device means lots of cost-cutting measures, like saving on cameras.

Personally, I believe K40 is a poor device for gaming for one simple reason - it lacks a headphone jack. Surely we can use dongle, but this means we cannot charge the phone while playing, which means severely limited gameplay sessions. Surely we can use Bluetooth speakers if we are ready to sacrifice responsiveness and convenience (BT has noticeable delay and requires a separately charged device). Surely we can use phone's speakers if we are ready to annoy everyone around us continuously.

Or we can just give up on sound, because who needs sound anyways, right?

Oh, and the reason I won't be buying it is simply because they decided to cut costs on cameras, on top of removing a 3.5mm jack. And I already have a gaming PC. And will probably get Switch on top of that. Some day. Maybe.

Just get the Poco F3 (which is a rebranded Redmi K40). I mean, nowadays some phones are good enough for gaming, they don't need the "gaming" tag inside their name.
I just bought the Poco F3 alongside my iPhone Xr. I use my iPhone as daily driver and the Poco F3 for gaming and downloading torrents.
Initially I was looking at the Asus Rog 5 or even Rog 3. But in the end I decided to go with the Poco F3 (much cheaper and handles games good enough).
Imo, Xiaomi released the Redmi K40 Gaming model just to put the MediaTek chipset inside it. To give people an alternative to the SD870.
