Even Song sell the Experia 1 series unlocked now. You are right though, many phones are still only available on contract from one of 3 main carriers. But it is changing, especially now that Rakuten has developed their own 4G/5G network. And the biggest selling phone in Japan is the IPhone, actually. It has more than 50% of the market here. Almost nobody uses a popup phone, these days. They do sell a few of them still, though. Mainly aimed at elderly people. And expats don't need a letter from an employer to get a phone. You just need to have a bank account, and a residence card (if buying on a monthly contract, which is fair enough). Or just get an unlocked phone (of use your own from your own country) and get a cheap sim card available online, or at any electronics shop. Can get those for 980yen a . month (couple of gigs) of just buy it in cash and pay 980yen x 12 months. Then throw it away after that.

    Everything look good ... But will they drop the IGZO screen to make way for oled?

    Hope they make the right decision ... As this seem to compete with iPhone and
    to fill the place that Huawei left in Japan.

Sharp makes phones for more than 20 years. On what they should work harder is camera quality, I hope this will be much better(Sharp cameras did not perform well in dark scenes).

              By the way this is an interesting move from Sharp to talk with Leica. The back of the phone looks a little bit weird, but what it's important is camera quality. We will know the final specs on Monday.

                Anonymous, 08 May 2021Does Sharp sell in US?? Sadly no, the last phone Sharp sold in the US was the Sharp Aquos Crystal (306SH) back in 2014/15. It was a good phone and I would've also purchased the next model had it been offered here.

                  I just dont understand the amount of bezels phones have and then still need to cut a hole in the screen for selfie camera. All these cutout, teardrop, holes and so on and then have like 5mm bezel at the bottom of the screen. Just move the 5mm bezel on top of the screen where you have all the sensors and cameras and speaker in it. But then again this Sharp is only for Japanese so i dont really understand the point of advertising there product in this site over other brands that we dont get any info or news about that have global band phones. there are elephone, ulefone, leagoo and lots of other brands that do the low end just like infinix and tecno but with better price and also better hardware but this site dont do news about them. It's actually annoying that this is basically a phones site that reviews tablets, laptops and even graphics cards and talk it like it's a tech news site while dont exactly make news about most of the phones in the market. Only the Samsung, Apple, Oppo, Vivo, Realme, Xiaomi, Sony and Nokia are the main brands that get news from left to right daily

                          Curved screen = stopped looking = FAIL!
                          Never again! These OEM's need to get with the program and drop the useless curved screen fad!

                            Camera setup looks promising and they've gotten rid of the disgraceful dual notches.

                              I owned Sharp 303sh (2014) which has 4.5' 1080p IGZO panel on it.
                              Its color is phenomenally. By far the most impressive display that I have seen.
                              However, Sharp never choose the right parts to make their electrons.
                              Touch panel of their phone malfunctions till today. I can still see people compaining about their bad responsibility happens on Sharp sense3.
                              This happens to my owned 303sh too. That touch panel go spooky if you have any skin oil on it.
                              Speaking of their OLED panel, however ia the worse in the world.
                              People compaining that they got shadows just in few days of usage. Totally unusable.

You can't do any better in this area. That being sad, I liked more when Samsung calibrated the screens so that colors pop, now reviewers love it because "it's color accurate BS" but I don't need fukin color accuracy on my phone, not editing in Photoshop there, all I want is a gorgeous screen.
