I've own lots of Xperia flagship for the past years, own a Leica D-Lux, Sony RX100v. Trade the Sony with Fuji X-E3 & couldnt be happier (need a bigger sensor).

I stand with my point regarding how AF on other phone works & some of the samples here are out of focus on subjects.

Tann Hauser, 11 May 2021Dont know who you are either, but I welcome your aknowledge... moreSince this is the basic mode we are talking about, unreliable focusing could sway a lot of potential buyers from this product. Even professional photographers have moments where they want to take a quick snapshot with their cameras while leaving all the settings in auto. People who always have time to fiddle with focus modes or manual focus are in a minority side, and for those who do not, good AF could be easily a crucial factor.

You don't understand, loving a product as a whole does not equal to liking every aspect of the product. I love my a6600. I loved a6000 that I had before that as well, but that does not mean that I liked the way it behaved in wide focusing mode and other few shortcomings it had. This phone exhibits the same behavior as a6000 while using its telephoto lens(that's what the samples show and what you are defending), and considering Sony greatly mitigated that same behaviour in newer alpha models in the past, what we are seeing here is worth a concern.

Finally I'll disregard your final paragraph as mere whataboutism. Obviously there is not a single camera, whether it is a phone or a dedicated camera, that never fails to AF on subject all the time. But that is nothing to do with the hard fact that the majority of telephoto samples presented here are out of focus. Stay in the topic, thank you!

As I already said, this being the way the camera is programmed to do cannot be an indication of what should be happening. The basic mode of Xperia camera app does not allow you to change the focus mode nor switch to full MF, so 'Just turn AF off' is not the solution.

Sony clearly recognised this as an issue, and that's literally why it mitigated it by improving the subject recognition behavior on newer alpha series. In the end users don't care how the algorithms work, but they only care about how satisfying the outcomes are.

Also those samples that he posted the link to, don't even look that good. I think the P40 series is when Huawei improved massively and stopped having watercolour cameras.

Important thing is that P30 and p20 pro cameras were excellent and way better than their iPhone and Galaxy counterparts.

Sony never said that Xperia phones have DLSR-like quality.

I mean geez did anyone actually take a look at the photos beside the thumbnail? It's absolute garbage when you zoom in, it's grainy as f*ck, there is virtually no detail, and I am actually starting to doubt if it's even real because they look like samples from a Xiaomi midranger from previous year.

And still fanboys are mad that GSMA does not think these samples are DSLR-like. Damn.

There is nothing wrong with being a 'fan', but there is everything wrong with being a blind fanboy. Sony cameras have been garbage for years, absolutely not on level of the price they are asking for their phones. The fact that fanboys still accept it and even praise it slows down the process of Sony actually working on their cameras - if they keep getting feedback as if there is nothing wrong, what reason they have to improve?

Sony makes great devices. With the phones, the only letting the product down is the 3rd party bloatware(Spyware) they including in the OS. If it was just OS + Sony app, I would buy this and upgrade each year..as I do my iPhone. If Sony removes the bloatware they would increase their sales.

Anonymous, 11 May 2021This being the way the camera is programmed to do could be ... moreDont know who you are either, but I welcome your aknowledgement that Xperias AF acts like the one on their Alpha 6000 series. I did not ever state it is everso always reliable, but is not a dealbreaker in any way, as it is part of the alpha cam experience and functionality.
People using seem to love their Alphas, as them are most popular dedicated camera brand in the world, and I am certain the newer Alphas AF acts just the same, as it is not some wonder of AI to read your mind intentions, but is based on an algorithm. And if it doesnt act reliably in some scenarios, there is always AF off toggle.

For counterpointing opinions you'd actually have to show me an actual phone cam that doesnt ever miss a photographers intended autofocus point, ever. I have yet to see something like that, as it does not exist.

Furthermore, a statement that objects in focus on those shots are blurry is just plainly not true, sans two telephotos alone as I previously stated that have no problem with focus but motionblur only.

Do you guys even own any of these, or Alpha cams, or mkII phones? Seems to me you all comment on sth you never actually used, nor have any idea how it actually behaves in real use.

Tann Hauser, 11 May 2021Fella, this is Alphas dedicated AF, and behaves exactly as ... moreThis being the way the camera is programmed to do could be no way a justification of what is happening let alone an indication of what should be happening. My a6000 I no longer have was also 'programmed' to often shift the focus point to the left and right sides in wide focusung when it thought it should land the AF there, but that does not mean I was fine with that behaviour or I found it acceptable. Sony's newer models have much better subject recognition and I can tell this from my experience with a6600 that replaced my a6000. Now, I can use the aforementioned focus mode more reliably :)

I do not know much about you or anyone in this forum personally, but I do not believe defending an obvious flaw of a product and trying to pass off criticisms from others as a mere preference thing would help Sony in any way. Assuming the samples had been taken in camera app's Basic Mode where you cannot choose your favourite focusing mode, non-reliable AF could be a dealbreaker for many.
