Tann Hauser, 11 May 2021Here is a sample shot with my 5II 70mm cam alpha autofocus ... moreThat is the way all AF on camera phones behave, for years. 🤦 Not exclusive just for Sony Alpha.
What Nick told by the samples are, on subject that been focused, details are blurry like its taken by shaky hands, get it? And I wholefully agree with him based on my observation.

Tann Hauser, 11 May 2021Fella, this is Alphas dedicated AF, and behaves exactly as ... moreThis being the way the camera is programmed to do could be no way a justification of what is happening let alone an indication of what should be happening. My a6000 I no longer have was also 'programmed' to often shift the focus point to the left and right sides in wide focusung when it thought it should land the AF there, but that does not mean I was fine with that behaviour or I found it acceptable. Sony's newer models have much better subject recognition and I can tell this from my experience with a6600 that replaced my a6000. Now, I can use the aforementioned focus mode more reliably :)
I do not know much about you or anyone in this forum personally, but I do not believe defending an obvious flaw of a product and trying to pass off criticisms from others as a mere preference thing would help Sony in any way. Assuming the samples had been taken in camera app's Basic Mode where you cannot choose your favourite focusing mode, non-reliable AF could be a dealbreaker for many.

Nick Tegrataker, 11 May 2021I'm sorry but is there any reason that the photographe... moreThe older alpha series used to misfocus on the non-main subjects when wide autofocusing mode is used. This happened on my old a6000 so frequently that I had to switch to zone autofocus and set the focus zones on the center whenever I used a wide aperture lens and wanted to make sure that it locks focus on the centre. It was annoying, yes! But I have a6600 and I'm really happy with its usability :)
In my experience not only a6600 but in general newer models with more advanced subject recognition can deal with this issue much muuuch better which might explain why you have never seen such an issue before.
And this should never happen on a phone camera because they have near infinite DoF and almost always a focus failure results in a loss of sharpness across the entire plane, something we can observe in some of those zoomed in indoor neon photos. Tann is correct to an extent about alpha's AF behaviour, his info is outdated at the same time.

I could have easily touch focused on some side object and the central plant would have been blurred/out of focus:

h... moreThanks for the samples, some look great, some.. not so much due to the way they are processed. Definitely not that I'm doubting your photographic skills, but just my plain observation after pixel peeping.
UWA camera seems be able to retain a good details across the frame, if a bit too noisy around the corners and sharpened up. The main camera is has a very good HDR (at least at night) to compensate for harsh contrast difference nicely. The telephoto camera, on the other hand, is struggling to keep the image sharp in some cases (due to focusing and camera shakes) and again, the images coming out of it have a tendency of getting treated with strong edge enhancement which hurts the quality quite a bit. I really like the overall colour reproduction, but arguably Sony's phones aren't the best when it comes to detail processing.
With that said, I'd definitely like to see how the phone performs in ACTUAL low light - looking through the exif of your images, they are all shot in a range of ISO 50-250, with a few exceptions being the two car photos (ISO 640). GSMArena's usual low light test scenes forces the sensor to pump up the sensitivity to much higher levels, and after all that's where many phones fall apart.

You are trying to make a vague point about this unique alpha cam algorithm feature with 247 focus points across the sensor for it to choose from, as not behaving like plain AF on other cameras, justifying it by a simple fact that other dont even have this option, as if additional camera autofocus features are somehow a bad thing. One can easily turn off alpha algorithm AF and rely on plain AF with option of center and wide focus area, or simply choose touch focus point as desired.
These shots are made by simply activating the camera and relying on alphas AF to choose the subject/object. It doesnt make them bad in any way, just not to your object focus liking.

But these are early days, we will have our comprehensive reviews and comparisons with other phones in a few months' time.

Tann Hauser, 10 May 2021Well, plainly and simply, Autofocus in cases you mentioned ... moreI'm sorry but is there any reason that the photographer would want to focus on a LED pillar (which, by the way, is actually not on focus either which you can tell from the edges not being sharp enough) on those shots where the car takes up the most portion of the frame? Why would someone ever want to focus on the lower right section of the frame when taking the zoomed-in shots of the cityscape so that they could keep the most unimportant part (a barely visible sign at the corner) sharp while letting everything else get blurred out into oblivion?
"It choses the nearest object, and prefers the one in center and in motion."
I know how it works, and let me say this: Even then dedicated cameras usually won't try to randomly focus on the very corner corners or edges just because they are the closest, especially when the target is insignificant in size. If the main subject(s) is clearly located towards centre and still confuses the the focus point as the tiny sign on the dead corner or a small portion of the stone seat on the bottom edge, then that's just a terrible AF system that needs a lot of further tuning.
"one can also turn AF off completely, so the shot will be more flat looking"
Do you have any idea what you're saying here? Turning off AF won't change the depth of field, so you obviously WON'T get a more flat looking shot.

h... moreThanks for the extra samples. Great quality indeed. Is this from BASIC mode?
I ve seen the compare of 1II and 1III in auto/basic mode, and it seemed the 1III is much faster at processing lowlight shots, as if it uses lower shutter speed, or maybe some computational postprocessing...I wondered which one is it?

They will always be a lower tier brand compared to Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi, Huawei, Oppo, Vivo. People trust Chinese brands wholeheartedly. Japanese Sony struggling in their own country.... Loser Brand loser fanbase screams like a low end environment.

When the subject in the... moreWell, plainly and simply, Autofocus in cases you mentioned chose the led light pillar in front of the car, and the front nearest street building to focus onto, which are perfectly in focus, and that is no failure of the camera, but the usual autofocus behaviour of any camera.
If one choses to focus onto the subject you obviously wished for to be in focus, or the photographer intended to by composition to be in focus, one simply uses manual touch focus on the viewfinder.
Bit surprised you dont realise how autofocus behaves. It choses the nearest object, and prefers the one in center and in motion. Its the same behaviour as on all Alpha cameras.
Of course, one can also turn AF off completely, so the shot will be more flat looking.

Sony is a disappointment as usual. The phones should be available the day they are announced, not months later when the devices are already old.
