Is there a way to still require it to ask permission to update apps? I like updating apps manually, and I don't want to grant something permission for it to update at all, then just update automatically whenever it pleases. I want a way to confirm the update every single time. For me, that's more secure.

Wow, this is certainly a welcoming addition :)

Not sure what your point/argument is/can be?

Very good, very good. I guess finding a good Linux phone isn't AS urgent then, if Google is reversing course. I want to use F-droid as my primary app manager.

And this is why we should support Epic hitting Apple hard, even if Epic themselves are scum. Everyone benefits from the end of monopolies.

A longer 5 minute video clip recording would be welcomed

raycon , 20 May 2021nobody asked for that thoughPrivacy and FOSS-minded users do. There are a bunch of reputable third-party app stores with F-Droid being the primary example. I use that on my deGoogled Samsung phone.

sumdumguy, 21 May 2021This is a terrible change! Google should disallow side-load... moreWhy is it that whenever a change like this is made, people just always assume the worst? You do understand that there are other reputable companies that offer app stores right? Google is not the only company capable of creating a secure app space. Also, don't you think a huge corporation like Google would take into consideration the dangers and put plans in place, idk like only allowing certified stores, much in the same way they only certify certain Android devices with their Google play services? Just saying, even if there were a bunch of scammy app stores wanting to take advantage of this, there are extremely simple solutions to take care of that but people like you just always assume the worst but never think about what could be done to mitigate it.

Google should not be like Apple.

This is a terrible change! Google should disallow side-loading apps on non-rooted phones ...not make it easier! I'm forced by my employer to use a bunch of side-loaded apps and I'm not happy about that. There's a reason we have Play Store and apps have to undergo scrutiny before they can be installed on (my) phones.

Basically they operated as regular apps that are allowed to download apps and update them. Now they are just expanding the permissions so it won't be asking for every update when 3rd party app store does that. Would be nice if you have an option both ways, to be asked every time and have it do that silently.
