    2) Selling worse screens to Apple is not gonna make clients choose their phones instead.

    3) If Apple does not get the screen quality they want from Samsung, Apple is gonna seek somewhere else (LG, Boe).

Each panel used by iphone is about $80-85.
Apple buys more than 150.000.000 oled panels per year.
Now, imagine if LG was only supplier.
How much money Samsung would lose?

Samsung Display and Semicon do not give preference to Samsung Mobile. They want to sell their products to whoever is interested.

The money they're making surely pales into insignificance compared to what they're losing to apple on flagship sales when someone will buy an IPhone 13 pro or pro max rather than an S22 Ultra or whatever comes next from Samsung.

sq2013, 31 May 2021Why do Samsung produce smartphone displays that they then s... moreLol, people seem to have no clue how licensing and contracts work. LTPO used in Apple Watches is not "new" thing, but it was finalized by Apple and contractually designed by a 3rd party under Apple's specifications. It doesn't matter if Samsung patents something, it's not like Apple steals it from them. You people do know licensing exists? Or that Samsung is a contractor for other companies. Then it's a matter whether you buy their stock OEM components or you order a custom design. People think Apple just buys stock generic stuff Samsung or BOE like everyone else. Well, that's not the case. They have tons of stuff done custom and then they approach manufacturers and ask them to create components based on their specifications.

Samsung only needs to compete with other Android phone manufacturers because they offer somehow the same features as Samsung does.

Rex Tech, 31 May 2021Finally iPhone catching up to rest of the world after 2 yea... moreIt's not about who does something first. It's about who's first to do something well. There is billion things Android phones do first. Most of the time everything about those things sucks. Then Apple comes a bit later and sets new standards that are then copied by everyone until they make another "first" that Apple polishes later on and cycle repeats.

Everyone raving how Always-On Display (AOD) existed on smartwatches before Apple Watch 5. Yet every single I've seen looked like total garbage and like they are just a terrible outline of the original face. Watch faces in AOD look nothing like their normal versions. Where on Apple Watch they all look nearly identical with very minor changes, usually if there is fat slab of color it gets replaced with black. Everything else remains the same. Especially dials like "Infograph" that has tons of elements and colors and they all remain the same even in AOD mode. With max brightness and AOD I still get full day of use on one charge. So, I'm expecting Apple will do something pretty cool with AOD on iPhones. It's not going to be a "first", but it'll be something everyone will copy from Apple for sure...

Why do Samsung produce smartphone displays that they then sell to apple that helps one of their biggest competitiors in the smart device market improve? It's completely stupid. Normal process is that if you develop new groundbreaking technology, you put it under wraps, you patent it and you implement on your own latest products. You don't normally sell it to the competition. It's like they're happy to prop up apple and apple's products. Insanity.

"A low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) display is a special kind of backplane technology designed for OLED screens and developed by Apple.
It was introduced with the Series 4 Apple Watch and is a critical part of how the new Apple Watch Series 5 is able to offer an always-on display experience without completely killing the battery life. "
