AnonD-1003038, 10 Jun 2021That's not how things work. There are always people in... moreYou just explained my point. Yes, Apple releases new models every year so people who want to change their phones can do so every year, and that is their primary source of revenue. If Apple doesn't release new models every year, some people may or will defer their purchases. AFAIK, the iPhone user base has been quite stable, which means that the vast majority of people who buy new models are existing users.

Anonymous, 10 Jun 2021Not sure what point you're trying to make. If that... moreThat's not how things work. There are always people in between who are on lookout for new device and they want to buy the latest and greatest for that year. And for that reason you still release new models yearly. It's same with cars. They release new models yearly, but hardly anyone buys new car every year. But if you're buying one, you'll probably take latest model and then drive it for I don't know, 5 years or maybe even 10 years and then buy new one again.

If that's the primary source of revenue, Apple won't need to release new models yearly. They can release new models every 5 years or so. Apple releases new models every year because they want people to buy them every year. It's simple.

AnonD-1003038, 08 Jun 2021You do realize they make money from just active users, even... moreYes this somehow true if you see Game Consoles did, But Smartphone is different, you paid much for a phone and it is more like you invest in a brand, if you look deeper, Apple Music cam offer lossless with the same price, much cheaper than Tidal, even Spotify who announce it first seems can't follow how fast is Apple did, yeah there are some consequences for lossless at same price, but still it is cheap service consideres we already pay for apple new server from each device we bought, lossless means they need more server since 4 minutes song can cost 50MB, spotify is hard.to follow the Apple strategy since they rely only on subscription, not hardware and software like apple did

AnonD-1003038, 08 Jun 2021You do realize they make money from just active users, even... moreAny one using active subscription of Apple services would need newer version of Software to take advantage of its new features as well. Most likely they don't mind paying low end offerings like Apple Music(which is really a bummer in my place with Amazon Music, Spotify and many other services offer better collection at far cheaper price points with a better UI). These are steady revenue but not going to INCREASE the bottom line. Now a days career themselves bundle many of the services that Apple offers. So, if my guess is correct, Apple probably won't make much through subscription from these types of cost conscious consumers.Only option is making them to buy newer ones frequently.

Note 20 Ultra, 08 Jun 2021Apple can't keep on increasing prices for its devices ... moreYou do realize they make money from just active users, even if they are on old(er) devices? It's users buying apps, users subscribed to Apple Music or Apple Arcade etc.

While Apple is great for mobile support. It is horrible for PC support. You will get 5 years of update support. But in Windows you get much better support. My 12 years old laptop run latest version of Windows 10 and it is pretty fast and stable.

Anonymous, 08 Jun 2021Indeed. Last year FBI released a report saying that it'... moreDo you have a link? I'm interested.

AnonD-1003038, 08 Jun 2021And why would they do this when they have a clear advantage... moreApple can't keep on increasing prices for its devices to offset shortfall in the reduced purchase in numbers(they don't report the number of iPhones sold) and consumers tend to keep longer their more and more expensive iPhones. To address the potential revenue shortfall, Apple needs to reduce the length of their support for the older devices. This shall force users to upgrade more frequently than otherwise, and Apple may not increase the price for sometime orveven reduce prices (since Software support also gets reduced in terms of number of years)

lol, 08 Jun 2021No, pretty sure they'll stay on the usual 5 to 6 years... moreiPhones continue to work for years based on how you use it. But official software upgrades will eventually be stopped beyond 3 years.Thats my guess. They do such odd things initially to make the consumers prepare for bigger things ahead. Supporting two major versions was never an Apple strategy earlier, for consumers.

                          AnonD-1003038, 08 Jun 2021But that's because those devices like 5s and 6 are not... moreHaven't seen u in a while

Crazy Android have to wait years for updates then phones get it are already outdated unsecure and old, Google don't know better

beep bop boop, 08 Jun 2021the 6s will definitely be dropped for iOS 16, 100%Yeah I’d agree on that

[deleted post]If fragmentation was a strength you would not be here envying us ios users. :) get yourself an iPhone SE, it’s more powerful and better supported than any crappy droid you could buy. :)

It'll still be getting security updates for at least 2 years after that, which is outstanding support. If models are very popular, they get security updates for even longer and 6s is one of those for sure.

Last year FBI released a report saying that it's becoming increasingly difficult to break into Android devices because of Android security being improved at breakneck speed by Google and the phone developer companies like Samsung, Sony, One Plus etc, whereas it's becoming increasingly easier to break into iOS devices

[deleted post]By what metric having 500 billion devices that get no security updates is "more secure" just by being within fragmented to hell ecosystem? LOL? There is still a "largest number of lowest version number users" that dictates exploitability, not fragmentation itself.

[deleted post]Snowden has confirmed, how it's easy to develop tools to compromise the security on iOS devices as the number of models are less and each device gets the same update on the same day.The average iOS user being dumb doesn't help them either.

Most of these people don't bother developing these tools for Android because of the fragmentation problem with a variety of individual skins on top of base Android.
The fragmentation that iboyz love to point out as a 'con' ends up contributing to better security.
