Anonymous, 08 Jun 2021They are supplying security updates to iPhone 5s and 6 (and... moreBut that's because those devices like 5s and 6 are not eligible to anything beyond iOS 12. They do continue receiving security updates further within iOS 12. 6s for example can run latest iOS 14.6 that is found on latest iPhone 12's so there is no need since it can run latets OS anyways. That will change once 6s stops getting updates which will probably be with iOS 15 (given it was released in 2015). It'll be stuck with iOS 15 and continue getting security updates under iOS 15.

LowNitro, 08 Jun 2021Nice advantage over Android (as always), but firstly, haven... moreWhich is why I'm confused why everyone is so excited. Apple has been doing this for ages. Phones whose last eligible iOS version was I don't know, version 12 will stay on version 12, but will continue to receive security updates because older devices still depend on it being secure. Majority of updates past 12.4 were security only with exception of 12.5 which introduced COVID notifications. And then more security updates till 12.5.3. iOS 12.5.3 was released on 3rd May 2021 and oldest phone to still be supported by it is iPhone 5s from 2013. 2013! That's from iOS 7 to iOS 12 which is 5 years as "promised" and after it got stuck on iOS 12 it continued to receive security updates for 2 more years and counting. For example, iPhone 4s received last update in 2019. A phone that was released in 2011. I know most people here don't care, but anyone who cares about security values such long term support that you just don't get on any Android. Period.

Android fanboys are quick to note that Apple is fragmenting their update progress. They see it as a weakness when in reality its a massive strength.

I mean, older iPhones will still get security updates and all that jazz, even if they aren't getting the full experience by updating with massive full-fledged updates.

I call that a win. But then again, at the same time, Samsung and Android are rapidly catching up, with the norm of 2 years being bumped up to 3 years of updates now. Perhaps by Android 13 or 14 we'll finally get an Android flagship with 5 years of software updates.

Nice advantage over Android (as always), but firstly, haven't it always been like this? iOS 12 received some security patches a few months(?) ago. Secondly, most (if not all) phones with iOS 14 will be updated to iOS 15 really, and iOS 14 being such a needed visual refresh in the system + version 15 will probably only be a little different, so, what's the deal?

Note 20 Ultra, 08 Jun 2021Most likely Apple will stop support for versions beyond thr... moreAnd why would they do this when they have a clear advantage with this? You want less fragmented ecosystem with longer device support? Pick iPhone. You want better privacy? Pick iPhone. Want to fiddle with device, use custom ROM's, install whatever app you desire and tweak the hell out of it, pick Android. It's basically as simple as that.

Note 20 Ultra, 08 Jun 2021Most likely Apple will stop support for versions beyond thr... moreAnd you are basing that supposition on what exactly????

if it's this news that Apple will now offer to continue support to a previous software version, then you are likely to be way off. As the article itself states:

'This new change gives customers time to update if they have device restrictions or requirements of iOS devices that are managed by an organization like enterprises and schools.'

Apple are setting new records here with the length of time a smartphone has received continuous official software support. They could very easily have swapped the older devices like the 6s, original SE etc over to this new support track. Nobody would have been surprised, heck everyone seem to be expecting such devices to be dropped this time round.

Note 20 Ultra, 08 Jun 2021Most likely Apple will stop support for versions beyond thr... moreNo, pretty sure they'll stay on the usual 5 to 6 years of active support and an additional 2 to 3 years of window support (window being software versions not most recent but still compatible with a lot of apps), a total of 7 to 9 years of support. iPhone 6 for example went from iOS 8 to 12, released in 2014, and only became officially outdated a few months ago.

Plus with the significantly improved system specs of much more recent devices, that may be subject to change.

Note 20 Ultra, 08 Jun 2021First fragmentation at devices following footsteps of Andro... moreYou know very little it seems.Apple have been doing this for years but are now making this an option.Apple still updates iOS 12 for those devices stuck on it.We will never see the pathetic fragmentation android has on iOS because Apple devices are premium and are made to be updated for at least 5 years. :)

DaFink, 08 Jun 2021Good move by Apple to be honest, and not dropping any suppo... moreMost likely Apple will stop support for versions beyond three years just like Android, and force users to buy new iPhones for latest Software upgrades. Eventually it will become another Android like platform.

First fragmentation at devices following footsteps of Android now, following footsteps in OS versions!! Eventually at some point both will become more or less identical!

AnonD-1003038, 08 Jun 2021Aren't they already doing this? Phones that aren'... moreThey are supplying security updates to iPhone 5s and 6 (and so on) on iOS 12, but these are not available to iPhone 6s and 7 and so on.

The new thing is that users with a phone that supports iOS 15 will have to choice to stay on iOS 14 and still receive security updates.

Good move by Apple to be honest, and not dropping any support for older devices is also a plus. The 6S is looking like it will finish its lifecyle with at least 7 years continuous software support. That's is an accomplishment indeed.

beep bop boop, 08 Jun 2021so in a way, they have 2 OS'sNot really, it just means you don't have to update to latest version of iOS straight away (if at all?) Nothing new for Android users as updates are usually hit and miss anyway depending what phone you have. Personally not that bothered which version I'm on as long as it all works ok. Just updated my Poco X3 NFC to android 11 and did a factory reset straight away and all seems good so far so even if don't get android 12 this will still do me for next 2-3 years untill 5g becomes the norm. 4g just fine for now.
