Its highly unlikely to be used as tele camera, due to quad bayer's reluctance to detailed images.

Even for wide angle it seems inappropriate to use quad bayer, although can be tried.

But my point is, for main camera, it doesn't look like flagship grade on first sight.

Since this is a Samsung product, comments here are as expected.

r33fd, 10 Jun 2021What's the point of this sensor? Probably just mark... morePhones use more than just a single main camera sensor these days. This sensor could be really useful in case of secondary ultrawide/telephoto cameras and as front facing cameras.

Rubbish, this can be a 16MP max with this diagonal

Good tuning could send it straight to the top of the DXO rankings

So '... more"... the JN1 is compatible with existing 1/2.8-inch products, allowing the sensor to be used for front-facing, ultra-wide or telephoto cameras, in addition to standard wide camera options. This means that users can take highly detailed selfies or group pictures in an amazing 50Mp resolution, as well as high-resolution video at up to 4K and high zoom ratios."

It appears that Quad Pixel/Tetracell Sensors seem.to be the way to go, atleast until they find a way to complete re-imagine the CFA.

So '4K60 and 1080p240' seem sufficient for such use. The 48MP sensors of Sony and Samsung have slightly larger pixels, and made for premium midrange and flagship cameras. If this sensor has good low light and HDR, it could easily compere with those sensors, as well as made a great module for periscope zoom.

How does the physics of that works?
Red wavelength goes up to 700nm, heaving a cells smaller than that means they will be transparent to photons of that color.

It's 2021 there are usually at least 3 cams on the back, telephoto needs a small sensor, usually that's ~1/3" (both normal and periscope). It is a big deal.

The HM2 is a lot better than this one, why would samsung bother making another, inferior, 12MP output sensor? Unless, this isn't meant to be used as a primary, rather as an auxiliary (UW/telephoto) or selfie, and that 50MP resolution is... well, for on-paper specs galore.

What's the point of this sensor?

Probably just marketing for people who don't know anything about photography.

this is for midrange and entry level phones
or flagships with multiple camera setups...

“every smartphone, from mid-range to flagship”?

I think if I had a company, I would not pack this in my flagship, not as main rear camera in any case.

A pixel size of 1.28 micrometer doesn't sound superb quality, when those with 1.8 um are already out in phones, and many binning sensors also touch 2.4 um.
The innovations by Samsung can't negate pixel size by this much.

4K60 and 1080p240 are generic solutions in mid range phones today, and this is the best this sensor can do?
Its a midranger just like GSMArena predicted.
