AnonD-909757, 21 Jun 2021We can still use a periscope style solution, the sensor is ... morePeriscope is not gonna work with wide field of view like 20-22mm.

    Also, a 1/3" has 5,86mm diagonal.
This is about pixel area only.
It does not count the frame of the sensor, which sometimes is same size of pixel area or even bigger.

This is why the ugly cam bump.

Anonymous, 21 Jun 2021Problem is: Bezel limits the sensor size used for front cam... moreWe can still use a periscope style solution, the sensor is on its side and simply the hole in the bezel have a 90° prism, this way a much bigger sensor can be used.
In fact, depending on the solution you use, you can use the main sensor and simply rotate the prism 180° or use other solutions like this.

*You know better than the security experts who advise to cover your camera?
*You know better than Mark Zukerberg who do it too?
*You know it better than the billions of identity thief, some having been compromised because of the front camera of their phones?

        (The list could go on)

If not, rather than insulting a stranger, learn about the subject you are criticizing someone about, reality isn't defined by what YOU believe it is, and the fact people say things that YOU, personally, think are stupid, doesn't change their veracity.

Mass surveillance by many actors (government and multiple of their agencies, corporations, group that target some people based on their ethnic origin, nationality, beliefs, etc for many reasons) is a PROVEN FACT nowadays.

The simple fact that computer scientists, hackers, numeric security experts and programmers in general are often serious about privacy while knowing a lot about the subject, by itself prove something.
In my case, can code in C, C++, Assembly and other languages, and you, what's your knowledge about all that?

YUKI93, 21 Jun 2021If you seal the front camera slot from the rest of the phon... moreI mean, the camera itself can still pop up, but it isn't sitting in a hole opened to the phone's interior but rather in an external enclosure.
So it still has fulldisplay and native privacy advantages.
There are many water-resistant electric motors, but we could literally ditch the electric motor and use electromagnetic actuation instead, like my fictional concept phone :
          https://imgur.com/gallery/ykYfaa6

So the pop up module itself have magnets, those align with other magnets in its enclosure that keep it in either up or down position, and an electromagnetic coil makes it move, it has virtually no moving parts and no wear, and the way I designed mine allow it to be used replaceable.
It needs either contact pins or a flat flexible data cable, though some may suggest it to be wireless and use induction to power it.

YUKI93, 21 Jun 2021The Poco F2 Pro is already a year-old smartphone by now, so... moreWell, it was the most affordable and closest to what I wanted while being not too old.
If there was a Poco F3 Pro that improved on it without loosing stuff (Jack, pop up, IR, etc) I would have of course prefer it, but for 300€ used I am satisfied with it.

              https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Univisium
And it is indeed the best middleground for 16:9 and typical taller smartphone media :

And even if that is possible, there are the electronic motors that operate the pop-up mechanism that needs to be concerned.

Even last year's Xperia 1 Mk2 and 5 Mk2 is still a good buy. I'm personally holding off the new Mk3 Xperia 1 and 5 because of the Snapdragon 888 thermal heating concern.

Their bezels are slimmer for each new gen, and more than slim enough already, had the Xperia 5 MkIII been less expensive and there was no Poco F2 Pro, I would have probably chosen it as except for the lack of IR, it is one of the closest phone to what I am looking for.

Yeah, I don't like the Apple brand for their anti customer behavior, yeah I prefer Android, but I have no issue saying what I consider good about Apple products, same for Samsung, Google and OnePlus, unlike typical Android fan and 100% Apple hater who will try to hate for no justified reasons.
So, if someone talks about one of the good thing Samsung did, like:
The S8/S9 bezel and/or the Iris scanner.
                          S10 camera layout.
General S10, Note10, S20, Note20 and S21 use of ultrasonic fingerprint or the good one in the S21.
                          The latest Exynos.
Integrated Pen of the Note serie.
                          The S21 Ultra camera setup.
Their use of Gorilla Glass Victus.
And much more stuffs like that, yeah, indeed I'll praise them for this, as those are good things, I don't like them, but I am not blind to their good things.

While 16:9 is still the gold industry standard for multimedia consumption especially for videos, 18:9 has the right balance between a tall screen and enough bezel for a front speaker or two and some decent front camera. That is why I still highly rate the Google Pixel 3 as one of my all-time favourite good-looking smartphone design to date.

There's nothing wrong with it, but it's not ideal for a truly water-resistant smartphone. Take the LG Wing 5G as an example - it can only have an IP54 rating because it has a pop up front camera, and IP54 is only useful for light water splashes. That is why OnePlus dropped the 7 Pro and 7T Pro's pop-up front camera and gone for a punch hole on the 8 Pro. That way, it can have true IP68 dust/water resistance.

No notch or punch hole to talk about, just a simple bezel for the camera and the speaker. No interruption from the notch or the punch hole when watching videos on full screen, and that is a big solid win for me. To me, it's either bezel or no bezel - that's it.

As for the UD camera, the first-gen iteration isn't selfie-worthy. I'll wait to see if ZTE can get it right with the second-gen successor.
