Anonymous, 28 Jun 2021Samsung had an app. It's call Linux on Dex.Dual boot has nothing to do with Dex. Dex is for using the phone as a pc with a monitor. Dual boot means that when you turn on the phone it will be asking you to choose what operating system you want to boot into: Android or Ubuntu.

My dream foldable features a 3.5mm jack.
My bearly acceptable foldable features a 3.5mm jack.
My absolute red line requirements for any phone features the inclusion of a 3.5mm jack.

I tried a mate 10 pro for one year... Hated it for one reason.

        I need foldable phone badly.

They were almost onto something with the high quality DAC a few years ago. "Let's make things better than the competition". Then they just seemed to give up on life and start releasing Homer Simpson devices. So dumb, even Homer would have told them to stop.

Foldables are nice to have. I mean for the market, is nice that they exists.
They are not mainstream yet, and probably they will not be for another 3-5 years. But, once more and more companies jump aboard, the prices will come down even more and more people will be interested in them.
But, I don't think they will ever replace the normal smartphone design. They will represent just some part of the smartphone world.

If Samsung makes the Fold to dual-boot Android + Linux (Ubuntu) I would buy it today.
                        Also:
                        - Bring back the SD card slot or add a secondary flash memory. We're talking about multiple storage locations, not about storage size.
                        - bring back the 3.5mm jack. We don't want wireless headphones that need charging!! And who cares cares about the thickness of the phone when buying a folding phone??
                        - quit adding a million useless cameras and just incorporate one of those digital cameras in it.
                        - NO stpd selie camera! Especially inside or under the display.
                        - make some real accessories like a strap-on keyboard for people who actually use their phone for work (writing documents, coding programs etc)
Bring the PC experience into foldables and in a few years the laptop will be obsolete and outdated.

flip, no camera hole in display, no samsung android

AnonD-762416, 27 Jun 2021Microsoft had they hype train going for two years before it... more"You'll never use a smartphone as your daily driver laptop replacement."

Hah, jokes on you. I'm using my LG as my daily pocket computer because of its Desktop Mode. I even installed Andronix and turned it into a full-on Linux desktop machine. Since then, I only open my laptop for gaming and Adobe-related work. Most of the time, I'm on my LG phone. Even Samsung has a well-polished DeX alongside Huawei's Easy Projection and Motorola's Ready For. The fact that smartphones can be used as pocket computer even when travelling makes me question how powerful smartphone chipsets of today.

As for the Microsoft Surface Duo, well I never have any slight interest in buying it so I won't talk much about it.

Personally for me, 18:9 is the best compromise for a smartphone screen. It's not too tall and not too wide.

An actual purpose? I dig gadgets and all, but foldables have yet to convince me they solve a problem - they're just a cross between a phone an a tablet, but they suck at being either.

I think it is harder to make foldable display into mobile phone. Mobile phone is the most abused gadget, the most fragile, the most expensive to make, and easily marketed than tablet/laptop. Yesterday we heard people doesn't care about computer on your phone, touch screen on your phone, even internet on your phone is too small. And here we are hearing same thing for foldable tech.

Mate Xs with more durable screen(s). Any other ends up like a brick, i.e. bad phones , mediocre tablet syndrome.

I like the surface duo approach best for now.

blue.sun, 27 Jun 2021Carrying a 150-gram device on your wrist? Good luck! It ma... moreIt can be designed to ensure we don't face such problems. The inner strap which comes in contact with skin can be a comfortable one.

Since we're putting it on wrist, we can have one reasonable camera for both selfie and rear camera usage. Some weight saving.
Plus using Snapdragon 450 (or 2 series) with a small battery (distributed cells along the strap) and screen can help further. We're talking about a 16:9 screen which is 2.6-3.0" when removed from wrist and used as a phone.
A secondary display can be used for bigger screen as an accessory.
You'll use and type on the phone only when it is expanded and removed from wrist, in non display-bending position.

People wear metal watches which weigh above 200 grams too. They don't cause health risks? In fact keeping them in any pocket can cause more health problems.
