Google will require new apps on the Play Store to use App Bundles instead of APKs

01 July 2021
App Bundles are currently supported only by the Play Store and not, say, the Amazon App Store, which is coming to Windows 11.

So Google is pretending that stores are officially "allowed" now but will require apps to strictly depend on their Google Play Services in order to distributed the app on the biggest Android store...
Even more lock in than before...

Akashraj, 01 Jul 2021Dude, did you even read the article? Old apps can continue ... moremore time and effort for publishers meaning that they have increased cost which they may pass to consumer or have google ads pushed more worsening the experience for end users if they dont spend money

So can anyone confirm if I understand correctly..
1- App bundle need internet connection to be installed.. Apk not.
2- Extracted Apk / downloaded Apk can be installed on any phone since the it contains all necessary files .. App bundle is not (can it be extracted? And if so, will it work on other phones?)
            Thanks in advance knowledgeable stranger.

Why all these negative comments? I knew about this feature for a while and I hoped more developers would use it, with aabs you save data and storage. It's awesome that's mandatory now!

They are going to restrict third party modded apk installation. So no more free download of paid applications. it is going to be like a Apple app store

So what this means is that when this feature gets implemented I would have comparability issues when I receive apps offline from other phones on my phone's.thats bad because some apps size are so large that it makes more sense to download it on one phone and share it offline to the others instead of wasting data

I feel Google will be sued for anti-trust violations very soon. Android was meant to be an open platform and Google is turning it into another iOS.

Anonymous, 01 Jul 2021Plz list the disadvantage of aab over apk?SlashGear wrote an article about it: https://www.slashgear.com/android-app-bundles-could-have-a-drawback-for-developers-power-users-19648220/

Inside that article, there's a hyperlink to an XDA article: https://www.xda-developers.com/google-android-app-bundle-play-store/

In layman terms, AAB doesn't allow you to install apps offline on other smartphone models. APK can easily do that since you can directly install the app from internal or external storage with no problem at all.
